Song of the chapter - Surrender by Natalie Taylor

Carl

"I know it won't ever be enough. I know what we have to do and what we will do... We will fight until the dead takes over this whole universe. That will be a while because we will stand together, no matter what." I sat in the seat beside Michonne as the king stood on the stand in the church, making a speech.

The whole church was full of the Alexandrian's as the king continued speaking to everyone with my dad standing right beside him. As Judith stayed sitting on my lap, playing with her rabbit toy Michonne brushed her hand on top of her head, stroking her hair carefully. I glanced down at her, looking up at Michonne with a cheeky wee smile on her face.

"Michonne take her. I need to see Blair." I admitted to her and she held out her arms to take Judith from my own. As my dad started to speak, I slowly and quietly crept out of the church earning a lot of stares from people including himself, my dad. I walked down the street and noticed the houses were starting to gain moss and rotting to them.

I guess when Deanna died, we hadn't really hand the chance to focus on our community ourselves. Well, I mean straight after my eye happened and then Blair and then Negan. It all just happened in the space of a month and now we're onto a new month. What will happen now? A lot happened last month, now what?

"Carl." I heard from behind me and I stopped quickly, turning around to see Enid there with her arms crossed over her chest. As I stood still eyeing her down, she walked towards me and tilted her head. "So, how's Blair?" "Do you really care?" I asked her, squinting my eye at her, knowing I am right myself. Enid never really cared about Blair. All she cared about was getting back at Blair for 'stealing' me from her.

"Carl, of course I do. I apologized to he-" "Look, let's get something straight. Whether you like it or not, me and Blair are holding the future and we will be having a baby. I know you don't like her so don't blame everything on her like you did last time you ran away from here to the hilltop. Blair, she isn't a good person but that's not the point. She is pure, beautiful and loving to everyone around her but she will protect us no matter what, that's why she kept this big secret from us in the first place, right? Or maybe she lied to us and she's really on their side, but I highly doubt that. So stay away from her and me..." I spoke at Enid, earning a meaningful glare from her.

Enid stared at me with pure hatred on her face as I done nothing but stare at her back. Maybe Enid was a good person but she wasn't towards me or Blair, maybe everyone else. I sighed deeply and turned around to walk to other way to the infirmary. Maybe I was harsh on Enid but everything I had been building up right now, is hurt and anger. Anger makes you stupid and maybe stupid gets you killed. That will happen to me and everyone else, including Enid.

As I pushed the door to do into the infirmary, I noticed Dr Harson grabbing a few medicine bottles from the shelves to the right of me. "Hey, Carl. Here to see Blair?" he asked me as I shut the door behind me and nodding briefly. "Cool, let's go see her." He said and I followed him down the halls to Blair's room. I didn't hear anything much in the infirmary because it was empty. Everyone from last month is mostly dead and didn't survive their injury's but Blair did.

I turned the corner and seen her sitting up in bed with a sports bra on and jeans. I looked down at her wound and it was all patched up nice and neatly. "You're awake." I sighed and let myself smile as much as I could. I noticed Blair's progress for the past few weeks and it's been something I've never seen before. It was amazing. "I thought you'd be sleeping." I admitted honestly and walked over to her as her eyes followed me around the room.

"Well I can't sleep for the rest of my life so why not sleep for most of it, right?" She laughed slightly and I smiled at her as Dr Hanson still stood in the doorway. "Are you ready to check?" He spoke up and we both shifted our eyes to him as he walked over to us. I knew what he was talking about and it was our baby. We never really got the chance to see if it was alright.

"We're ready." She said and I looked up at her, grabbing her hand gently. She flashed a small smile at me and I noticed Dr Hanson, smirk at us both. he moved over to the monitor and pulled it over to the left side of Blair. I helped her lie down on the bed fully so that Harson could get a good view to see the baby.

"You comfortable?" I asked her and she nodded as she breathed out a deep breath. "Good." Harson spoke and I seen him switch on the device that shows us the baby. "Just relax." He soothed Blair and she sighed deeply. I knew she was nervous and so was I. We both didn't know if anything was wrong with the baby or not. I gripped onto Blair's hand as Harson place the device on Blair's lower belly.

We both just stared at the screen, waiting for a movement or even a heartbeat. Even Harson was silent. Maybe he wanted us so badly to have this child as well as us. suddenly, the machine made a noise and it was like a train. Bu-bump, bu-bump- bu-bump. It was so beautiful as I seen the thing inside her move so carefully.

"Oh... god..." Blair let out a breath and squeezed her eyes together in relief. We all sat in absolute silence as we listened to the gorgeous heartbeat of out child. "It's beautiful." I heard Blair speak up and I stared at her as a few tears steamed out her eyes, of course it was happy tears, of course it was. "You both have a beautiful baby girl." Harson smiled at us both and we stared up at him quickly.

"Girl?" I asked him and he nodded. It was a girl. She was a healthy baby girl and she was alive. I stared at the screen once again, listening to the tiny heartbeat our little girl had. "She's so beautiful." I spoke up and I felt Blair squeeze onto my hand. I knew what me and Blair were doing here, was officially the right thing.
