"I, um- I was late."
"Late for? I need you to answer. Alex. Please pay attention."
"Work. I opened the, uh... the door and there it was... all green."
"What was? What was outside your house Alex?"

I run through the house, grabbing my car keys and money along the way. My head screaming that I'm late. I reach the door and yank it open, out of breath from rushing. I'm greeted by a leaf in the face. A whole tree, nevermind a leaf. My jaw drops and so do my keys, but the sound of them hitting the floor sounds a million miles away. There is... A forest, in the middle of... London! London. It should be concrete and cabs and cars and buses
Not grass and trees with moss and leaves. Slowly, I close my door again. Moving like a robot. I walk into my living room and grab up the phone.

"Mick. Hi. Mick.... yes I'm flustered... no Mick... listen... look out your... Mick! Listen to me! Look out your window!... No I am not high! Just do it!.... Ugh I'm coming over!"

I run to the door again and stoop to pick up my keys. This time, when I open the door I'm ready for the sight. The trees and the green filtered light from leaves far above, the cabs abandoned in the moss covered streets. The doors left open, as if the drivers have scrambled away. I hurry down the street, barely recognising the houses that I was so familiar with. Twigs scraping my cheeks and leaves tangling in my hair. When I reach Mick's house I stand and stare. Ivy covers the entire building, reaching up and over the side of the bricks, pulling the building to the ground so slowly. The doorbell has been shot through with roots, the switch hanging in the air by the wires. There's not a chance it'll work. From the look of the city, it's a miracle the phones are still up. I turn back out onto the street and walk slowly. The pavement is soft and green, not covered in dirt and pool of water from the last night's rain.. and other substances from drunken nights. The air smells fresh, like the car fumes have been sucked out of the air and left only freshness. It's nice. Clean and new. New. Everything looks different and new.

The atmosphere isn't filled with motors and rumbling or beeping, shouting people or yapping dogs. Instead there's birds, and the quiet gentle rustling of leaves. Calmer.
My ears are suddenly filled with a sharp buzzing and I grimace, pulling out my phone.

"Alex! It's green!"
"Yeah, I told you to look out your window."
"My internet is down. Lucky the phones are working."
"Are you outside?"
"No way dude! I don't want leaves in my perfectly gelled hair!"
"Mick- grow up and get outside!"

I hang up and look back up to the sky. Letting the sunlight warm my face.

"What was outside your house Alex?"
My eyes slowly slide up to meet their harse gaze.
"New life."
