Don't Cry

My hair is yanked back and I nearly fall off the chair.

"Ow!" I yelp, grabbing my scalp.

"Do you even brush your hair?" Ally yells back, angrily dragging the brush through.

"Ow, ow, ow, ow!" I say, increasingly loud.

"Beauty is pain, Wendy," Vivian says, putting finishing touches on Olivia's makeup.

"Forget it then," I huff, trying to shoo Ally's hands away from my head.

"Fine, fine. I'll just leave the tangles in and curl your hair to hide them," Ally tries to coax me, gently sweeping my hair up this time into a high ponytail.

"Hurry up, Ally. I still have to do your makeup and Wendy's too," Vivian says, starting on Evelyn's face now.

"I'll finish up soon," Ally replies.

"Where are you guys going, Olivia?" I ask, bored with staring into the wall.

"We're going bowling."

"Bowling? You're dressed like this to go bowling?" Ally asks.

"It's couple's night. They have a dance and bowling competition. Winner gets a coupon for a free spa treatment," Olivia says excitedly.

"That actually sounds fun. I have to go with my parents to meet Carson's parents. It was supposed to be a romantic night out, but now I'll be sitting through a boring dinner."

"It shouldn't be that bad. Vincent and I are having dinner too."

"Yeah, but you two will be alone. You guys can be lovey-dovey while feeding each other mashed potatoes and chocolate cake across a candle-lit table. I'll be sitting scared that everything will go wrong once the conversation hits politics territory," Ally sighs.

"Knowing Wendy, she'll probably more busy stuffing her face than feeding Vincent," Evelyn laughs. Everyone nods in agreement and I don't even argue it.

"Where are you and Vincent eating at?" Olivia asks.

"I'm not sure. Vincent picked it out. I think it was called..." I pause, trying to remember. "I think it's called Indigo?"

"Isn't that a color?" Vivian asks, confused.

"Oh, it's that really fancy restaurant! He must've made a reservation weeks ahead of time," Olivia says. "My parents tried to make a reservation a few days ago, but they were already full."

"Really?" I ask, ignorant. "Is it expensive?"

"Heck yeah," Olivia firmly nods.

"Really? Why did he pick somewhere so pricey. We could've just gone and ate at a diner," I sigh.

"He's trying to be romantic," Vivian explains. "At least you have a date. I'm the only one here spending today alone."

"You can tag along with us to go bowling," Evelyn invites.

"Third-wheeling is even more depressing."

"Ask Logan out then," Evelyn suggests.

"Logan? Why would I ask Logan?"

"Come on. It's pretty obvious you guys have something," Evelyn smirks.

"What..." Vivian nervously draws out.

"And he clearly likes you. You don't think we see you guys randomly looking at each other during lunch?"

"No way. I'm not dating within our friend group."
