He was going through all of the stuff in his room, trying to decide what he should bring with him to college and what should stay. He came across some old pieces of paper, he saw random dates on the left hand corner of each paper. He skimmed over the writing, it couldn’t be his handwriting it was too nice, when he got to the bottom of the page, it read:

Love,

Y/N

He did a double take, were these letters really from you? He could’ve sworn he threw away everything that you gave him. You would write to him whenever you got bored in class. More often than not your letters didn’t make any sense. He flipped through the pieces of paper. He found one from December 3rd, 1984.

“Hey Steve,

Have I ever told you how much I hate biology? It’s so awful. We’re talking about the reproductive system and Tommy H and that Billy kid keep making jokes about it. I’m pretty sure Dustin is funnier than both of them combined. I’m writing to you because I’m not really paying attention but, I’m hoping that since I’m writing this letter for you it looks like I’m taking notes and Mrs. Dunham won’t notice. I swear if I hear one more goddamn joke from Tommy’s mouth I’m going to kill him. I wish you were here so that we could suffer together. Shit, Mrs. Dunham is coming my way, okay I guess this it. Bye Stevie.

Y/N Y/L/N”

You guys didn’t start dating until January of ‘85, he looked for another letter, he was trying to find a specific letter. He flipped through about 5 more pieces of paper before he found the one he was looking for.

May 16, 1985.

Steve,

I’m writing this to you while I’m in the library during my free period, I don’t even know if I’m going to give this to you. I’ve been thinking about a lot of stuff lately, mainly you, I mean you occupy my thoughts most of the time. I’ve been thinking about how school is almost over, about how you’re going to graduate, about how I’ve still got 1 more year of high school, I’ve been thinking about the party can you believe that they’re going to be high schoolers next year? Life is crazy, my life got crazier when I met you but, I wouldn’t change it for the world. You mean a lot to me Steve, you really do. My whole family loves you, my parents talk about how you’re perfect for me. I don’t know what I would do without you. I’m so proud of you, you’re going to do amazing things Steve, and I’m going to be right next to you. I love you Steve. I know we haven’t told each other that yet but, I love you a lot.

Love,

Y/N Y/L/N

He crumpled up the letter and threw it against the wall. You guys had broken up two months after you gave him that. Steve and you had began fighting over something stupid, then it quickly escalated. Breaking up wasn’t easy for either of you. You both had a screaming match for hours, by the end of it you both had tear stained faces.

He hasn’t talked to you since the night of your fight. He wasn’t sure if you knew that he was leaving to Bloomington for school in tomorrow, he knew you still hung out with the party. Your break up also took its toll on them, nobody was more upset about it than Dustin, you both took care of him, you acted as his parents. They found it odd to hang out with one but not the other, they understood that it was neccessary but, they also hoped that you guys would get back together and then things would go back to normal.

It would never be that easy, you two weren’t meant to last. It was as simple as that.

As Steve kept reading the letters, they made him reminisce about the good times that you guys had. He thought about when he first met you. It was so cold outside, it was snowing, he was trying to run inside when he slipped on some ice and fell on his face. You rushed to help him up and he could’ve sworn that he felt a spark, after you helped him up he walked you to your first class, he promised that he would save you a seat at lunch.

Steve gathered the rest of the letters from you and he threw them in the trash. He felt like a weight was lifted off his shoulders, the remaining pieces of his relationship with you were now gone. He looked at the clock and decided that it was finally time for bed.

Steve woke up bright and early, he needed to put all of his stuff in his car, the party was coming over to help and say goodbye. He got up, showered and ate breakfast, then he started packing up the rest of his things.

He heard three knocks on his door, he opened the door and welcomed the party. They started helping him with his stuff they ended up getting distracted and started talking about their latest DnD campaign.

It was now 3 o'clock, Steve had to leave in an hour. The party hugged Steve, they were saying their goodbyes, some of them were getting emotional, mainly Dustin, he had to reassure them that he would be back for Thanksgiving and that they could hang out with him. They made him write down the address of his dorm so that they could send him stuff, the party brought him in for one last hug, and Steve got in his car and drove away.

He felt sad but, good at the same time. He wanted to start over and going to college in a different city would give him that. He felt sad because he was leaving the party but, he would see them in a few months so, it was okay. Steve finally felt good for the first time in a while, he felt good.
