Character names should be easy to tell apart from one another.
Characters with too similar names can be hard to tell apart in your stories, people might mix them up.

Character names should never be distracting or annoying.
Make sure your chracters name are easy to read and are easy to say. Sure you can vary the names to bizare fantasy like name, but some names just can't be distracting so don't call your character something like 'butt licker' especially if it's a serious story about cancer or something else that's serious.

Try to avoid stereotypes in your chracter names.
All the school bitches are named Stacey, or Candice or something, maybe if you named your TC something like Alexandra or Eughegenia everyhting would be so much better....

Pick names that reflect the time, region and culture that your character is from.
Don't call your character in the 1900 some weird modern name like Barbra or Tenielle.

Two excellent sources for names are baby name books and phone books and of couse the name books of Wattpad.
For instance I have a book for Girl's names, Boy's names, Fantasy names, Nature names, and Surnames.

Be careful when choosing names that rhyme or are alliterative.
