Dan always had a weird feeling that was bothering him for the past few days and he couldn't figure out what, it wasn't him and Phil of course, they were just fine. In fact, Phil had even suggested they go swimming together when the weather warms up in a few days and Dan was excited. It was most definitley not their relationship and Dan was sitting on his bed after school trying to figure out what it was when he hears the front door opening.

He smiles brightly, already getting up and running down the stairs to see Thomas' bright blue eyes and rosy cheeks when he stops in his tracks at the bottom of the last step. His mother had walked in empty handed.

"Where's Thomas?"

She looks almost in a daze as her eyes focus back on him from whereever they were before. "He's back with his mother, she's doing much better now." her voice was quiet.

Dan's heart breaks into tiny peices, "Oh," he says quietly, "I didn't get to say goodbye."

Caroline sighs and drops herself on the wide sofa. "I didn't either, when I went to drop him off at daycare, she was there and practically tugged him out my arms before leaving."

The house was quiet as Dan watches his mother rub her temples over and over agian, she must be really upset. He walks over to her and sits down. "I hope he'll be okay."

"I hope so too." She lays her head on his shoulder and Dan rubs her head. He hears slight sniffles and suggets its from the unexpected absence of Thomas.

Dan needed a way to cheer her up or at least take her mind off the current situation for a bit so he thought, maybe this is a good time to tell her about Phil.
"Hey mom?"
"Hmm?"
"You know the boy Phil from across the street?"
"Yes, he's so nice."
"Well, we're dating."

It went silent once agian in the house before she answers. "That's great honey, I'm glad you finally found someone."

Dan frowns. Her voice sounded happy but sad at the same time, usually she would be bouncing all over the walls with excitment. Thomas leaving must of really upset her.

"Mom are you okay?" He asks.

She picks her head up from his shoulder and gives him a sad smile. "Don't worry about me Bear, I'm fine, just tired is all."

"Okay." Dan didn't want to acknowledge that her eyes were red and it looked like tears were about to pour from them.

She gets up just then and pats him on the head, "I'm going to take a quick nap okay? I'll fix dinner in about thirty minutes."

"Take as long as you like, I'll fix dinner for us, I can't really cook so how does a ham and cheese sandwich sound?"

She smiles, "That sounds delicious, thank you Dan."

"No problem, now go get some rest."

She nods and then turns, making her way up the stairs, pretty soon Dan hears her door close and then the big house is silent once agian. Dan still had that weird feeling but this time it had settled itself at the bottom of his stomach. He thought that it would leave since it had to have been because Thomas didn't come home but there it stayed, waiting. At some point he had dozed off after thinking so hard about what this could mean. Forgetting to make sandwiches. He slept just like his mother upstairs, leaving everything silent.
