the next afternoon, caroline was walking to max's locker to meet her and grab her book for fourth time block

"mayfield!"

"hey, harrington"

"today's, uh, halloween, right?" the brunette questioned with uncertainty

"yeah! best holiday ever, what're you wearing" the redhead replied, looking up from her notebook in her hands

"i don't know, i talked to steve last night and he said he'd ask nancy for ideas"

"nancy?"

"his girlfriend, nancy wheeler. ya know the dark haired boy, in third? i think his name is mike?"

"oh yeah, him"

"nancy's his older sister"

"oh shit, so you're like forced to know him" maxine chuckled, nudging the brunette beside her

"i guess," caroline stuttered, giving a slight roll of her eyes. "steve and nancy had some problems last year, but he won't tell me what they were. just that they're back 'on' now"

"i overheard from billy that steve used to be the 'king of hawkins high', until he ditched his friends for nancy and something else, i don't remember what it was" max sighed, sliding her notebook into the open locker

"uh, yeah, i think-"

caroline was interrupted by a voice being cleared. she and max looked to their left to face dustin henderson and lucas sinclair, 2 of the boys who've watched them since they saw the two girls walked into third period the day before

"um... hi max and caroline. i'm dustin, and this is-"

"lucas"

"yeah, we know. the stalkers" max responded, placing her right hand on her locker door.

lucas started to stutter, creating a small chuckle from caroline. he began to signal back and forth between him and the curly headed boy while talking to max and caroline "uhh. uh, no. ac-act-tually... we weren't st-stalking you"

"no, we were just concerned because, you know, you're new and all"

"yea-yeah-yeah for your safety" lucas says, pointing to dustin and smiling, hoping the two girls would believe their 'highly believable' story

max looked at caroline then back at the two boys, caroline gave the redhead a look of i don't know, you do the talking, considering caroline knew how max could be so nice to her but as soon as anybody else came along, she became stuck up, and kind of a bitch.

dustin started talking again, hoping he wouldn't loose the attention of the two girls "mmm hmm. there are a lot of bullies here"

lucas interrupted him, clearly hoping their focus wouldn't loose him and only be on dustin "so many bullies. it's-it-it's- uh its cr-crazy"

"is that why you're wearing proton packs?" max asked, tilting her head to the side, causing a quick laugh from caroline.

"well, these don't function. but! i do have this handy-dandy little trap here. and look, it even opens and closes. look, look, look" dustin said, opening his 'handy-dandy little trap'
