Chapter 2: Why are you still here?

The maid respectfully knocks on Jia Huian's door before she hears a soft-spoken voice that says, "Come in..."

She quietly enters the sleeping chambers only to see 4 beautiful maidservants are looking back at her, the General's wife gracefully turns her back to look at her as well. All she can say is that the young madame is indeed beautiful. No wonder that the General has been staying in her courtyard during nighttime for 2 nights in a row without returning to his own courtyard.

"Furen, the General is waiting for you at the main entrance to go back together to the Prime Minister's residence."

Jia Huian looks at the maidservant as she smiles for several seconds before she says, "En... Chuntao, give some biscuits to... What is your name?"

The maidservant then answers, "Xiao Hong..."

"Chuntao, give some biscuits to Xiao Hong as a reward. You can go now. I will soon meet with the General after I have given my morning greeting to lao taitai."

After Xiao Hong left, Jia Huian looks at the corner of her room and thought, "Why is he still here? He is supposed to be gone by now."

"Chunhua, you will come with me to the Prime Minister's residence. The three of you stay here and get acquianted with the other maidservants including the guards as well. We have to gain support in the General's residence in order for us to live a good life."

All three maidservants nod their heads in agreement with sullen looks on their faces except for Chunhua who excitedly arranges various kinds of biscuits and candies into the wooden box for her to bring back to the Prime Minister's residence. Jia Huian smiles as she watches that excited maidservant of hers, her second brother is definitely pampered by all in the Prime Minister's residence.

Even her legal mother is quite taken by her second brother by personally taking care of him whenever her birth mother is out for her monthly visit to her grandparents' residence in another district. As the journey will usually take days, her birth mother usually did not bring her second brother along with her except during festive months.

"Chunhua, we shall go now. Chuntao, Dongmei and Jinghua... Take care of yourselves while I am not around. I will be back before it is dark."

As she walks towards the waiting hall, Jia Huian keeps thinking about the General. Why is he waiting for her? Is he not supposed to be gone by now?

"Huian greets mother-in-law..."

Madam Li Lanying looks up and smiles at her daughter-in-law, "Huian, you are always on time to give your morning greeting. Have you eaten your breakfast?"

"Yes, this daughter-in-law have already eaten earlier this morning as she wanted to go out early to visit my family together with her maidservant, Chunhua."

Madam Li Lanying nods her head in approval, "Good. Bojing is waiting for you so that he can accompany you to go back to the Jia Residence."

Jia Huian looks at her mother-in-law and says, "Huian thought the General is supposed to leave for ..."

"Huian, no worries... I have given him some stern reminders to treat you right. That son of mine is unlike his late father. My late husband despite his serious demeanour was such a loving husband... Bojing is nothing like him. Far from it."

Jia Huian smiles apologetically, "Mother-in-law, this daughter-in-law is fine really. The general treated me ... Kindly."

"Huian, it seems like you are still treating Bojing as a stranger... He is someone that rarely shows his true feeling to others. But, observe well, and you will see that he care about you. Just be patient with him. I can see that you are the right one for my son."
