Equipment:

- drill

- hammer

- spiles

- hooks

- buckets

- lids

Make sure they're clean!

When?

What causes the sap flow is pressure in the tree, which is created by rising temperatures.

So, the flow would happen during times of the year when temps are above freezing during the day, but below during the night.

This is usually between mid-Febuary and mid-March, but can differ depending on location and weather.

Overall, it usually goes on for 4-6 weeks.

Which Trees?

When selecting which trees to tap, one should look for healthy and mature trees. So, a tree that is at least 12 inches in diameter.

Depending on just how big a tree is, it may be able to support multiple taps.

(12-20in = 1T. 21-27in = 2T. 27+in = 3T.)

Also! Keep in mind, trees with better access to the sun also make for better tapping trees.

How?

Tapping the Tree:

Make sure the tap is at a height where you can easily access it. (3 feet is recommended, but whatever is best for you is most important.)

If you have tapped your selected tree before, do not put this seasons tap anywhere within 6 inches of where last years tap was placed.

Make sure not to place your tap in an area with any damage!

Drilling the Tap Hole:

Before you start drilling, make sure your drill has the bit attached!

When drilling, the size of the hole needed will depend on the size of the spile one will be using.

Overall, the hole should be about 2-3 inches deep.

Make sure to pay attention to the colour of the wood shavings! If light brown, you're good. If dark brown, it would be best to drill a hole in a new location.

Inserting the Spile:

First, clear away any wood shavings from before.

Second, insert into your spile into its loop on the hook and then put it into the tap hole.

Use your hammer to tap the spile into the tree. Be gentle, as tapping too hard can cause the wood to split.

Bucket and Lid:

Insert the hook into the hole at the rim of your bucket. Then insert the metal wire of your lid into the double holes on your spile.

Then insert the metal wire of your lid into the double holes on your spile
