"Goodbye, Darlings! Have a brilliant final year!" Euphemia waved her pale yellow handkerchief as the scarlet steam engine began to pull away from the platform. Eloise Potter closed the window and sat down on her seat, which wasn't a seat at all as it was the lap of a certain Sirius Black. His arms fastened themselves around her waist and she leant back into his chest.

"I have a feeling this is going to be a good year." James Potter said, looking out of the window at the lush countryside whizzing by, biting his thumb. Peter Pettigrew nodded in agreement,

"Yeah, even though we have N.E.W.T.s." his words caused a chorus of groaning to ensue,

"For Merlin's sake, Wormtail, why did you have to say that dreaded word." Sirius whined and rested his chin on Eloise's shoulder,

"Sorry! Sorry!" Peter called, putting his hands up in surrender.

"Rem, catch!" Eloise called, holding a Bertie Botts bean in her hand and preparing to throw it. Remus opened his mouth and proceeded to catch the sweet in his mouth, both he and Eloise cheering loudly as he did so. With all of their pointless celebrating, the Marauders hadn't noticed a redhead known as Lily Evans slide open the compartment door. The girl stood with a hand on her hip and and cleared her throat, attracting their attention. Eloise squealed when her eyes landed on her best friend and jumped off of Sirius' lap, throwing her arms around Lily and swaying from side to side,

"LILY!" Eloise shouted and Lily laughed, hugging the brunette tightly.

"ELOISE!" she replied, her volume matching that of Eloise's. The Potter girl grabbed a hold of Lily's hand and pulled her to sit down on one of the seats, sitting cross-legged next to her and leaning her back into Sirius' side.

"How was the rest of your Summer? How was France?"

"It was good thank you, Elle but let's catch up later - I have to go and do my Head Girl duties." She winked and flashed her badge at the grinning girl sat in front of her, "Remus, shall we go?" she asked the scarred boy and he smiled slightly as he shook his head,

"I'm not head boy, Lils." he said with a quick glance towards the boy to his left who had casually rested his arm against the back of his chair and straightened his glasses,

"Peter? Congratulations!" Lily exclaimed with a raised eyebrow and the small boy shook his head, "Sirius?! Really?", the girl continued.

"No, Lily." Sirius smirked as James appeared slightly crestfallen and his arm had dropped to his knee,

"Eloise?!" Lily shrieked, beginning to jump up and down, "Oh wait...you're not a boy...who is it then?" there was a slight clearing of the throat from the last remaining person in the carriage,

"It's - uh- me." James voice came out quiet and his mischievous hazel eyes lacked their usual sparkle,

"Oh...right- well congratulations, James." Lily spoke, shock evident on her face. She blushed lightly in embarrassment and surveyed James' downcast expression, her green eyes softening and suddenly appearing quite guilty.

"Thanks." he muttered and shook his head, any trace of tears that definitely weren't there vanishing, and stood up, plastering an obviously fake grin on his face "Shall we?" he asked before shuffling out of the carriage. Lily turned to Eloise and bit her lip,

"I feel horrible." she whispered, "He looked really sad."

"He's been really excited to tell you since he got the letter, Lils." Eloise said, her heart clenching at the sight of her brother sad, "He's matured you know..." she told her friend, "He's been really trying." Eloise lifted a hand and patted Lily's shoulder, "Give him a chance?" she asked, "I haven't forgotten what you admitted to at the end of last year." she said with a small smile and Lily blushed, standing up and following James out.

"What did she tell you?" Sirius asked and Eloise smirked,

"That she may not think my dear brother is such an arrogant toe-rag anymore and that he might be quite handsome." she giggled and Sirius threw his head back, laughing,

"Prongs is going to love this."

"And that concludes the sorting!" Professor Dumbledore called into the hubbub of students, fidgeting impatiently in anticipation of the feast. He clapped his hands, and food bloomed out of nowhere, taking a number of first years by surprise. The Marauders, ate, talked, drank and laughed, all feeling slightly downcast that this was their last ever sorting. To James' utter delight, Lily had come and sat with the five friends with the excuse of 'working out the start of term speech' (really it was to make up for upsetting the bespectacled boy), she even went as far as to sit by him, and hold a civil conversation with him. Remus and Sirius in particular found this very amusing, based on the knowledge they had gained on the train. Throughout the feast a certain redhead was getting more and more flustered, knowing she was going to have to speak in front of the whole school. No one was able to calm her down until James gently laid a hand on her arm, and softly spoke in her ear;

"Dumbledore wouldn't have picked you if he didn't know you could do it. And I know you can too." The girl's eyes warmed as she leaned into him, her long hair falling over his shoulder.

"Thanks, James" she muttered and she grabbed his hand, pulling him up to the podium at the front.

Lily cleared her throat as her emerald eyes searched the vast room, the expectant faces of the students facing back at her. She settled on the sight of Eloise giving her a thumbs up and a grin as Sirius cupped a hand over his mouth,

"WOO GO, EVANS!" he shouted with his usual charming smile and Lily rolled her eyes, although unable to suppress a grin at the boy. Sirius and Lily had become close over the past year, with her best friend being his girlfriend, they had spent time together and surprisingly got on very well.

"Thank you for that, Sirius." Lily smiled and he winked at her, "So I-we," she corrected herself, gesturing to James who stood at her side, hands in his pockets and hair falling over his eyes as he casually rocked on his heels, though his head snapped up when Lily pointed to him and he saluted to the students with a small smirk. "We would to welcome the new First Years to Hogwarts, I'm sure you'll find it...satisfactory." she sent a smile to Dumbledore, "And to those of you who have returned-"
"I share your pain." James interrupted her, earning a laugh from the Hall and an amused tut from Lily,

"Yes, well, ignoring James, lessons begin tomorrow at the normal time so, get lots of sleep...who am I kidding, that's highly unlikely." she flipped her red hair over her shoulder with a smile, "Have fun catching up with your friends and don't eat too many Honeydukes sweets."

"And watch out for Filch, some say he can smell your fear." James added ominously, and strode down the hall, sitting back down in his seat with Lily as the students and teachers clapped. Dumbledore's eyes twinkling as he watched Lily and James laugh with one another and McGonagall sending him a knowing look.
