There is a common misconception that digestion is the same as metabolism. Let's figure it out. The first stage of digestion is digesting food. In this process, proteins, fats, carbohydrates and micronutrients (vitamin, minerals and trace elements) are extracted from food.
Molecules derived from food during digestion are used for the body's needs. This is the next step, which is called metabolism.
Even when a person is at rest, the body needs energy for its hidden functions (breathing, blood circulation, maintaining hormone levels, cell formation and recovery).
The energy produced as a result of digestion and metabolism is primarily spent on maintaining these basic functions, and then on physical activity.
If the body receives more energy than it spends, excess calories are stored.
