NIGHT had fell by the time we returned to the orphanage, to celebration and joy, under a clear sky filled with twinkling stars. It was a happy time, a feast had been made by Aldo, or at least whatever he could scrape up, just as Reiji installed the newly made generators, and the power came back on, lighting up the orphanage like fireworks.
The benches in the cafeteria were dragged outside in the field around the building, so everyone could feast under the clear night sky, a warm zephyr breezing by. I watched everyone eat, staring at their cheerful faces and suddenly I felt at home. It was a feeling I lost for a long time, and as much as I hated to admit, all those nights alone were beginning to wear me down. Sleeping alone, with nothing to look forward to the next morning, just surviving. It was nice, having something else as well.
"Alright, lets play a game." Pierre suddenly said, getting everyone at the table's attention, as the younger kids played their own games in the grass, holding a deck of cards in his hands. "This game is called the question game." He explained, shuffling them in his hands.
"That's creative." Mitch smirked, putting aside his plate of food.
"Do you wanna play or not?" Pierre asked, his green eyes twinkling. Marissa wrapped her arms around his torso and snuggled up to him.
"I wanna play." She said. Everyone else at the table muttered grumbles of agreement, and Pierre began to explain the rules.
"The rules are very simple," He said, dealing a single card to each hand on the table. "Whoever has the highest card, gets to ask a question to the person with the lowest card. Any question, and if you want to chicken out...you..." He looked up, deep in thought.
"You have to kiss the person!" Mitch suggested, making a kissing gesture with his lips.
"Perfect!" Pierre said, his eyes lighting up.
"A kiss?" Victoria blurted out, her face turning bright red. "I'm not kissing anybody."
"Then you better hope you have the middle cards." Pierre said, shuffling the deck and putting it down. Marissa made a face next to him and turned to Victoria.
"It's okay, Vic. You don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with..." She reassured.
"Yeah yeah, can we just play?" Pierre said, rolling his eyes. Everyone nodded their head and turned their cards around. I hid a smug smile as I saw the Ace of Spades staring back at me, universally acknowledged as the highest card in a deck. I showed everyone my card.
"Looks like Roach goes first, you get to ask..." Pierre looked around, and grinned mischievously at Katherine. "Kitty has the lowest card!" I looked over at her, and as her eyes met mine for an instant, I almost saw a flicker in them. What was that?
"Uh..." Everyone stared at me, as I struggled to come up with a question. I felt sweat form on my forehead, the anxiety of being the center of attention so suddenly making me nervous. "Do you like Pierre?" I blurted out suddenly, watching her contort her face. I mentally face palmed, swearing at myself for choosing such a stupid question to ask.
"What!?" She exclaimed, furrowing her eyebrows. "I don't have to answer that."
"You have to answer the question!" Mitch playfully slammed his palms on the table, pretending to be upset that Katherine wasn't following the rules of the game.
"Or kiss me?" Pierre suggested, earning a hard smack from Marissa and a disdainful look from Katherine.
"I don't like Pierre." Katherine admitted, a slight shade of pink on her cheeks, as she sent a glare at me. I looked down, away from her angry eyes. "In fact I think you're kind of a dick."
