Luna's pov
"I love you." I held onto my mothers hands so tight.
"I love you more." She said so lifeless before the beeping came in.
"Mom." I cried as her eyes closed slowly.
"Nooo dont leave me." I choked as her grip on my hands loosened. "You cant leave me!"
My mom always had problems with her heart.. I always thought she could over come it.
We thought she was getting better and it wouldn't become a problem.
"Im so sorry mija." My tía sighed as she held onto me so tight.
"Mom wake up! Pleasee." I was hysterical.
She didnt wake up.
My best friend was gone.
—
A couple days later
"Mija are you ready?" My tía Paula walked into my moms room. I was just laying in her bed one last time.
"Yeah." I muttered as i took in the scent of my mother.
I stood up and walked out the house with my aunt.
The car ride was silent and quick.
We drove to the cemetery for the burial.
I got out the car with red roses in my hand.
We both had a love for red roses.
My mom would always place a big vase full of them on our kitchen counter.
We walked over to the group of people wearing black.
Some were family. Some were friends from my mothers work. She was a nurse at the hospital she passed away in.
She loved that job. Not for the money. But solely because she loved helping other people.
I recognized my cousin Vincent.
"Hey mama." Vincent said hugging my tía. Then he looked at me.
"How you holdin up?" He pulled me in for a genuine hug.
"Im okay." I let out a sigh as i watched my mothers casket be placed into the ground.
I tried my best to keep calm.
But i was hurting.
I just stood their silently as everyone talked with each other.
"H- Hola mija." I heard a voice.
I raised my brow and turned around to see ... my father?
This is the first time i have ever seen him in person.
Okay not the first.
The first time i've seen him was when i was 4.
Thats a long time ago.
He is not in my life. Obviously.
I lived in Brentwood and he lived in Freeridge. Not very safe there.
My mom left my dad when i was 4. All i know was he was a gang member.
She wont tell me exactly what happened for her to leave him.
She just told me she wanted me safe.
And that was enough for me. I guess.
We had no contact with him.
I never tried talking to him. And he never tried reaching out to me either.
But my mom did keep contact with tía Paula. She came to visit sometimes. But she also lived in Freeridge.
She always tries talking to me about my dad. But i refused to listen. I just didnt want to know.
I only know him from the photos my mom kept of him and i when i was younger. He had a lot of tattoos.
"Hello Miguel." I say looking at him serious.
Then i turned back to my mom's grave.
"Your mother was amazing." He sighed.
"Yeah i know."
I felt a nudge on my arm and it was my tía.
She pulled me away from Miguel.
"If i were you i would start trying to get to know him." She said which made me look at her confused.
"And why would i do that?"
"Because you are going to have to live with him."
