Chapter XXII

Cadence's POV

Once again, I was sat in front of my vanity getting re prepared for the banquet

We were running late, and the ball was to begin in less than half an hour

Anne was in a rush as she curled and tied my hair in complicated yet beautiful ways

The reason we are late is due to the unexpected outcomes of my magic aptitude test

Everything turned into chaos when I got back to the carriage and announced my 'results' that had no results

Lady Lena was busy rearranging the party schedule, now that I had no magic to show off

I changed into a short and puffy white dress that was soft as can be

[ "Phew, Princess you are finally ready to go!" ]

Anne says well letting out a huge sigh of relief

I look in the mirror, satisfied at my incredibly dolled up self

My diamond studded tiara really made me look like a princess

My hair, golden and bouncy, flowed upon my shoulders naturally

We had exactly 10 minutes until the ball and the walk alone took 5 minutes, as it was on the other side of the palace lands

Thus, we departed immediately, hoping we wouldn't be late

I mean, what kind of host turned up late to her own ball?

Luckily we arrived just on time, and everything seemed to be all set when we entered the hall

I must say, Lady Lena sure did a good job of planning and decorating, everything looked great

My eyes instantly went to the dessert table, where a countless variety of little cakes and sweets were held

Would it be rude if I started eating already...?

[ "Oi" ]

I jumped in surprise at the deep, chilling voice that called out to me

I turn around to see his icy red eyes stare straight down at me

[ "G-good evening Father" ]

His brows furrow as he looks at me, clearly displeased

[ "Oh, the birthday girl seems to have forgotten a certain deal?" ]

Ah!

I could feel my face start to turn red as I hurriedly proceeded to fix my mistake

Well that was until I was interrupted, by Lady Lena who had walked over to us

Her smile was as charming and gentle as ever

[ "It is a pleasure to see you again, Klaus" ]

[ "Mm" ]

Father replied

...

Quite the short and lacklustre answer, but judging from Lady Lenas non changing expression, she seems to be used to it

[ "What may you have gotten for Cadence? It is her special day after all" ]

Lady Lena says well wrapping her arms around me

Father's eyes are glued on me as he says in the same monotone voice,

[ "Wait and see" ]

[ "Your Majesty and Madame, the guests have begun to arrive" ]

A guard announces with one leg on his knee

[ "Ah, I must hurry to go greet them! Anne, please take Cadence to the back room. Her grand entrance is not until a bit later" ]

[ "Wait" ]

Father says loudly, just before Anne is about to grab my hand to lead me the way

[ "There is no need for you. I'll take her" ]

Anne seems shocked at the Emperor orders

[ "Y-yes your majesty..." ]

[ "Good. Now leave" ]

Klaus says in a demanding tone

Lady Lena quickly grabs Anne's hand, says a final bye to me then hurries off

It was now only me and Father left standing here

[ "Shall we go now, Daddy?" ]

He stares at me blankly, before walking off without a word being said

I quickly go to follow and catch up to him

As we continue to walk I find my little child legs, struggle to match up with Father's pace

I can feel myself putting in extra effort to keep up with him

However, I suddenly feel myself struggle less and less, and eventually, I'm walking in my regular pace

"Hm, that's strange?" I thought

I look up to see Father ever so sneakily, glancing at me

His eyes quickly avert mine, when he realised that I have noticed

He... could it be he is slowing down for me...?

I feel somewhat warm and..... happy...

We enter a room with a few sofas in it, and a large double sized door that exceeded my height by three folds

If I'm correct, that door should lead to the grand staircase going down to the hall

I guess this is where I'll be making my entrance

[ "Oi" ]

Father calls out me again

[ "What is it?" ]

I ask curiously

Oh, what could it be this time?

[ "There will be many influential people. Don't mess up" ]

I swallow back the lump in my throat

[ "Yes...." ]

Just thinking about having to interact with all of them is making me feel... strange

It felt as if there were a large weight on my stomach

[ "Oi, why is your face so pale?" ]

Father asks, his voice cold and icy as usual yet somehow I feel as though I can detect the slightest bit of..... worry...

[ "I-it's nothing at all..." ]

Something tells me I wasn't so convincing, as the response I got was,

[ "Are you an idiot? You are my daughter. Let's see who dares to defy my kin" ]

His smirk was attractive but chilling to the point that it would send goosebumps down your spine

At this momment, it looked as if he were the king of hell

Yet, despite all this, I somehow felt..... joy and relief

His every word and expression was cold and sharp like a knife, but it felt as if this was his own way of comforting me

My heartfelt warm again, with this thought in mind

[ "Hmph if anyone dares defy you just behead them" ]

.....

Somehow..... it is hard to believe that this is the ruler of our nation...
