Words: 1000~
Warning: ANGST
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was so very silent. No bird in the sky or creature on the ground to fill the silence with hums, growls or chirps. They all fled long ago, sensing the intensity that filled the air before a storm.
And a storm had come.
Manifesting itself through desire and fuelled further by greed. It rocked the surface in disarray, leaving many inhabitants in despair, all the way through till the aftermath.
Soft little patches landed on his skin, like snowflakes, but warm. Littering it's pale tone in grey. A man with raven hair, which slowly faded away under these particles.
A static that had sealed his hearing subsided. Was that his heartbeat he could hear? The soft thumping in his chest calmed him dearly. It was rhythmatic, hypnotising how the slow beating had reached his ears and lulled him in a peaceful state.
He felt two hands gently hold his cheeks, the touch so gentle he barely felt it. He opened his eyes slowly, trying to get used to the blinding light from above.
And he was met with an angel, hovering over him, surrounded by the light of the grey colored sky above.
His angel.
He felt something wet hit his face, time and time again, painting it with their sorrow.
Why were you crying when you were finally together again? Did you miss him? Were you worried about him? Or was it everything else that had torn the two of you apart?
A war.
He remembered it all now. The war that had forced him and his love to abandon their home and prepare themselves to fight for their country, their 'glory greatest'.
The destruction was catastrophic. Everything he's ever known. Gone.
Did they win? Could you call this outcome a victory?
He lifted his hand, noticing how heavy it felt, how difficult it was to reach out to his love. He noticed how his arm looked bruised, covered in blood, making the grey dust stick to it.He noticed how numb it felt when he placed his hand, with difficulty on your face.
You looked so heavenly in his eyes, beautiful in every way, but he liked your smile the most; soft, gentle, happy. Did he make you feel happy? Did he get you to smile enough?
Was it ever enough?
He felt your fingers brush over the hand he had placed on your cheek, holding it, tilting your head so you could kiss the inside of his hand. Tears were still rolling down your face, stopped on one side by the hand you placed back on your cheek, never letting go of it. A small smile graced your lips.
Oh how much he wished to be able to get you to smile like before. That beautiful, soft, gentle, happy smile he loved so much. The one that tugged on your lips when the two of you ended a kiss, the one that appeared when you woke up in the morning, in his bed, to the sight of him beside you. The one you wore throughout the whole of your wedding.
The smile you reserved for him and only him.
The feeling of your lips on his pulled him out of his wishful thinking, but put his mind in another kind of blissful state. He loved you so much. He wanted to kiss you back, to show you the love he returned for so many years now.
But why couldn't he move?
The fogginess that had clouded his mind had prevented him from noticing. The hand that had reached out to you, trying to hold you, sooth you, had completely lost its functioning. Only connecting you two by the lips and the firm grip you held to prevent his arm from colliding with the earth.
Oh how it hurt him that his last chance to show his love to you had slipped through his fingers.
He realised the wetness on his face weren't only your tears anymore. They filled his eyes, clouding his vision in a blurry haze.
Was this his last attempt to show you his feelings?
Was this the last message he could give you now that his body was failing him?
To say he will miss you too....He could barely make out the movements of your lips in the blurry haze that had clouded his eyes. His ears, failing to receive your last words to him as they denied him a last chance of hearing your voice.
He felt his body cut off all senses, making him blind, deaf and unable to reach you anymore. His nerves shut off and his mind slipped in a disorienting fase.
He was unsure of what would happen to him now.
Will he wake up in a beautiful paradise, waiting for your arrival?
Will heaven open it's gates to him? Or will he have to wait in hell with all others who have taken a life in this bloody war?
And what will happen to his body?
Will the earth reclaim him? Or will his body crumble to dust, like the city he had tried so hard to protect?
At least he knows one thing for certain.
Your final words to him were not ones of desire,
Only love.
A promised love, eternal through the vows you made on your wedding day.
A warm feeling rushed over him, before he sank deep into a peaceful abyss, disconnecting from his body completely. His heart beat it's last drum after fighting so long to keep going, all to stay with you for as long as he could.
His body slowly started to wither, turning into the same warm, grey, particles that had painted his skin. He steadily seeped through his loves fingers, becoming one with the layer that had laid below and on his form.
And with a final gust of air, he flew high into the sky, to later whirl down and cover the once beautiful country he lived in, into a grimmish grey.
His fight was over
All hail the king of the ashes
