The legs swayed from side to side, covered in frost and leaves. It was hard to tell how long she had been up there in that tree. Her body and face were hidden by low hanging branches. I didn't want to look. Whoever this woman was, she was someone's beloved family member. I didn't want to dishonour her, or her family by turning her death into a gruesome spectacle.
"I don't know how it came to this, whether it was your own doing or someone else's, but I hope you are now at peace," I said softly, in quiet prayer.
I crossed myself and looked to Christie, who was saying her own prayer, as tears sparkled on the tips of her lashes.
"This terrible," Christie whispered to me.
"It is," I replied.
I didn't want to imagine what it would be like for that woman's family and friends when they found out about her passing. The heartache that would haunt them for the rest of their lives, and the pain that would follow for years after, even when the event was a distant memory.
I knew that pain, so well...
"Sophie," Casper's voice called to me, pulling me away from the darker thoughts in my mind.
