CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

It was the weekend, and Heejin stood infront of her full body mirror wearing a white blouse and a black skirt, her long wavy black hair going down her back and framing her face, and minimal makeup.

"Why am I even doing this?" Heejin said straightening her skirt and glaring at herself in the mirror

She tried to look more lively and welcoming so that her "in-laws" don't get the wrong impression.

"Well, if I'm gonna play the part, then I should at least take the extra mile to make it believable," Heejin said going to her bathroom and grabbing the bottle of her medicine

"Hey friend, haven't seen you in a while" She said staring down at the two white pills on her hand

Her phone rang and she picked up.

"What?"

"Come downstairs"

With that, Heejin went downstairs to find Jaemin sitting down on one of the couches while Myungsoo sat across him.

Myungsoo had his eyes narrowed at Jaemin while Jaemin was looking anywhere but at Myungsoo, not trying to make eye contact with the older boy.

Jaemin's eyes finally landed at Heejin who was walking towards them.

"Where are you two off to?" Myungsoo said raising an eyebrow at the two teenagers

"I'm going to have dinner with his parents, Myungsoo" Heejin said glancing over at Jaemin who looked quiet frightened by Myungsoo

"Oh, okay. Don't come too late, and don't do anything you're not suppose to" Myungsoo said as his face softened and he sent them on their way

They drove to Jaemin's house and for some reason, Heejin was feeling nervous but shook it off.

"Feeling nervous?" Jaemin said keeping his eyes on the road while occasionally looking over at her

"Not really" Heejin lied, not wanting to let Jaemin know that she was very nervous

Jaemin looked at her for a second and he could see the nervousness in her eyes as she fiddled with her hands.

He grabbed her hand, intertwining it with his and smiling warmly at her.

"Don't lie to me" Jaemin said quietly as Heejin looked over at him and then looked at their hands

She didn't know why but she let go of his hand, her face hardened as she scoffed and didn't look at him.

"I have no reason to be nervous, it's not like I'm in an actual relationship with you" She said as Jaemin's grip on the steering wheel tightened, not responding back but looking at the road

Heejin knew she had made him upset, but she didn't know why she said what she said, maybe she was afraid that this agreement between would grow into something more, something she's not sure if she's ready for.

They arrived at Jaemin's house, he led her inside as the first thing that she walked into was getting engulfed by Jaemin's mom.

"It's so good to see you, you've grown up since the last time I seen you" His mom said as she pulled away from the hug and looked at her, examining how much she'd "grown" as she likes to put it

"Thank you, Mrs. Na" Heejin said smiling awkwardly as she glanced over at Jaemin who seemed a little annoyed by his mother's overwhelming greeting

"You don't have to call me that, call me Mom" Mrs. Na said as Heejin and Jaemin's eyes widened

"Where's dad?" Jaemin said as he tried to change the topic

"He's in the kitchen, hopefully he doesn't burn it down before we get there" Mrs. Na said as she smiled, all of them walking towards the dining table

They all say down as Jaemin's father brought in the food and Introduced himself to Heejin, Mr.na being just as kind but less touchy than Jaemin's mom.

"So, I heard you're father is in Japan right now, it must be hard being without him, I can't imagine leaving my Nana for more than a day" Jaemin's mom said

"Mom" Jaemin said warningly as his mother only shrugged her shoulders

"I'm used to it by now, he's always been away on trips since I was young" Heejin said chuckling at Jaemin and his mother's interaction

"And you must be excited for your mother's wedding, we've just got her invitation in the mail a couple of days ago" Jaemin's father said as Mrs. Na nudged him, seeing as Heejin's lively expression had wavered

"Erm~ I won't be attending" Heejin said giving them a pained smile

"Sorry, I shouldn't have asked about that" Mr. Na said as Heejin shook her head and give them a reassuring smile

"It's okay, I'm just not in a good place with my mother at the moment, not your fault, so please don't feel bad for me, I'd like for you to not walk on eggshells tonight because I'd like for you guys to get to know me properly" Heejin said as Jaemin's parents nodded and looked at her with sympathy, all of them changing the topic

It wasn't like everyone didn't know about Heejin's parents divorce, it was all the media talked about for weeks on end.

"the famous chairman Lee Hajun was getting a divorce with his wife Kim Minseo, after she was spotted out with another man"

Its something that everyone knew and it completely followed Heejin for the following years after that happened.

Kids would say mean things and people would gossip when she was around, and it left her completely alone, she didn't have a mother to stand up for her and her father was to busy being in trips in order to keep his mind off the gossip.

She had to grow up for her own sake, in order for her to survive in the world alone, even when there was people all around her.

She had to act cold, and desensitized when she wasn't, and it wasn't long until she fully became what she'd been acting like for years.
