Menstruation normally lasts from 3 to 7 days. A period lasting for more than 7 days is considered abnormal uterine bleeding.
Like any other phase of the cycle, menstruation is influenced by sex hormones. Changes in hormones can lead to the overgrowth and abnormal development of the endometrium and cause longer periods.
A hormonal imbalance can be triggered by:
- Mental and physical overexertion
- Significant weight loss or gain
- Stress
- Climate change
- Vitamin C, E, or K deficiency
- Intoxication
- Acute and chronic infectious diseases
Prolonged bleeding can arise from an imbalance in the clotting and other regulatory factors in the uterine lining. Sometimes prolonged bleeding can be associated with a gynecological condition, such as fibroids (myomas), uterine polyps, and adenomyosis, among others.
If you do experience abnormal bleeding, it is best that you see a doctor to rule out gynecologic problems, blood coagulation disorders, and liver and thyroid gland malfunctions.
