Chapter 6

Rye sat patiently as everyone quietly left the room. Xavier didn't want an audience. Once everyone was gone, Xavier took a seat on the desk across from Rye and folded his arms across his chest. His long legs were crossed as well and Rye couldn't help but admire how his giant build didn't stop his movements from being so fluent. But she pushed all of those thoughts to the back of her mind.

"Why do you not want a mate?" Xavier asked in a curious tone. He wanted to ask her if it was him she didn't want. But he decided against it.

"I don't like the idea of it," Rye said with a shrug. She avoided eye contact with Xavier at all cost. Those green eyes were doing things to her that she didn't like.

"What don't you like?" Xavier asked, "A mate is your better half. It's what human call true love."

"That's just a bunch of bull," Rye said irritated, "It's a survival instinct. Your wolf choses the best possible partner for you to reproduce with. It has nothing to do with love. Love isn't just meeting someone and them becoming your whole word."

"Then what is love?" Xavier asked, "Have you ever been in love?" He dared to ask. He didn't want to know the answer to that. It couldn't possibly be that someone hasn't swept her off her feet yet. Just the thought of another being near her was enough to drive him insane.

"Love is..." Rye's voice cracked as images of her father flooded her mind, "Love is the condition in which the other person's happiness is essential to your own. Love is giving."

Xavier observed the way Rye's eyes dimmed as she spoke. He watched the skin between her brows fold and her bottom lip trembled ever so slightly.

He walked over to when she sat and took a seat next to her on the sofa, "Rye, your happiness is essential to mine."

"You don't even know me!" Rye jumped up, "How can you say that?"

"I want to get to know you," Xavier watched her carefully.

"How?" Rye asked, frustrated, "Am I supposed to put my life on hold? Or am I supposed to give it away and come live with you here?"

Xavier stayed silent. She had a point. SHe had her own life and he couldn't just ask her to throw that all away for him.

"That's just how it is," Xavier said, feeling a bit dumb for the first time in 200 years.

"But why?" Rye went back and took a seat next to him, "Would you leave everything here and come away with me if I asked you too?"

Xavier couldn't help be honest with her, "No" he said quietly, "I have too many responsibilities."

"And I have dreams," Rye sighed, "I want to do things with my life. Not just be in your shadows and make babies."

As much as the image of Rye with a baby pleased Xavier, he had to put an end to her assumptions. "Rye, I am not asking you to do that. You are free to follow your dreams and do what you want in life. All I'm asking is that you be a part of mine and I be a part of yours."

"But how?" Rye asked, "I don't know you. What if I don't like the way you chew your food?"

Xavier looked at her confused.

"What if I am not in love with you, or you think you're in love with e when in reality it's only lust."

Xavier's mind was working fast. All her points were valid. "Then let's get to know each other," He said.

Rye looked into his green eyes and frowned, "What?"

"I want to get to know you," Xavier said, "You're right. We do not know anything about each other."
