Renee's pov

I awake the next morning with my head pounding and my stomach growling, I turn on the bed and recall how I exploded yesterday.

Yeah not to proud of that.

Sighing I get off of the bed and head to the bathroom where I brush my teeth and take a shower. throwing on black jeans and a cropped blue sweater when am finished.

I comb my hair up in a messy bun; to tired to do anything else and watch as a few unruly curls cascade down my face, breaking free from the scrunchie.

I don't give myself time to think as I walk out the door and head for the kitchen. My stomach growls emphasising my hunger as I walk over to the refrigerator and take out a carton of milk.

I look through the kitchen drawers until I spot a box of Cheerios on the very first shelf. I look down at my height and then back up at the Cheerios.

Shit

I think as I go on my toes and stretch my arms as I tried to reach it but alas, it's too far away.
I curse my genetics for making me this short as I a angrily grab a stool and stand on it, making me a few centimeters taller.

The stupid box of Cheerios is still out of my reach and I stomp my foot on the stool and almost lose my balance. Someone steadies me and I look up to see Elijah staring at me with one raised eyebrow.

"Sii accurato"
(Translation: be careful)

I jump of the stool and back into the kitchen counter causing a spoon to fall and jumping again when it clatters against the black tiles loudly. Elijah smirks at me before grabbing the cereal box and holding it out to me.
"You going to take the stupid thing or not?" He asks raising an eyebrow and when I don't budge from my spot his smirk grows.

"Pollastro," he states and my mouth drops open. I square my shoulders and determinly walk up to him and take the box from his hands with a shit eating grin on my face. At my school its compulsory to learn two languages and even though I may or may not have failed Italian I know the word chicken when I hear it.

And Renée Rivera is not a chicken.

"Who's the pollastro now?" I ask and he chuckles at my bad pronunciation of the word. I decide to ignore him as I empty some of the cereal into a bowl and pull up a chair, pouring in the milk before starting my breakfast.

He begins making his coffee and I scrunch my nose up at the horrid smell. I apsoulutely despised coffee. "I'm not going to leave your mother and even if I did, she wouldn't go empty handed,"

He says, pushing me out of my thoughts and I all but choke on the damn Cheerios. "What?"
"You were worried yesterday that I would leave her and I'm telling you that I'm not going to," he continues and I roll my eyes.

Its not like my mother isn't pretty because she is. She's freaking beautiful. With her blonde hair, green eyes and petite figure she could have any guy she wanted. I sometimes even think I look like her, well if you look past the dark skin and curly hair I inherited from my dad.

My mother is a beautiful woman. But Elijah will inevitably leave her because guys like him don't do relationships, he's a freaking mafia boss for heavens sake.

"Too bad I don't believe you then,"  I say and he clenches his jaw.
"I see you like testing me Renée,"
He growls at me and I swallow my saliva trying not to let my fear show.

"Good. People should test you more often because you should know that despite what you think the world doesn't revolve around you."  I say and he runs his hands through his hair and looks at me with narrowed eyes. I cower a bit by the intensity of his stare but do not relent.

"What do I have to say for you to believe me?"
"Why did you marry my mother?" I ask immediately, I've wanted to know the answer to that question from the moment he walked through the doors of my house.

"And I don't want some bullshit reason like love at first sight; because that shit doesn't happen," I state and Elijah looks at me with a smirk on his face.
"You're very... spoken aren't you?" He says and I  fold my arms and lean back on the chair waiting for the answer to my question.

"So you won't believe me if I tell you I'm in love with Rachel?"
"No" I say flatly and he nods his head.
"Smart girl," he mutters and takes a seat next to me. I try not to cower away as I squirm in my seat from his close proximity. I can even smell his cologne

Oranges and leather and just a touch of........gun powder maybe?

"Fine, I don't love Rachel but I needed a wife asap and your mother fit the bill," his vague answer just makes me more curious.

"Why did you need a wife?"
"You don't need to know that," he says and I roll my eyes again. I seem to be doing that a lot.
He grins slightly and shakes his head before continuing.

"I will tell you, however that I was surprised when I found out about you," he says and my eyebrows raise.
"My mother didn't tell you about me?"
"No not until after the marriage, and then I meet you and it's...."
He stops speaking seemingly searching for the right words.

"Well you aren't ugly Renée,"
My eyes widen when I grasp what he's trying to saying.

"But I'm only seventeen," I say as if that fact is somehow important. "And I-I-I, you, what?" I stutter out in word gibberish and he looks at me unamused.

"And I'm twenty seven. Age is just a number Renée, and do you really think I give a fuck about your age. I break rules for a living baby,"

He says looking at the exposed skin on my stomach and a shiver runs down my spine.
"You're married to my mother!" I scream getting of the stool and standing as far away from him as possible.

"Doesn't stop me from having eyes now does it?" He  asks sarcastically and clenches his jaw. I bite my lip in frustration and his eyes immediately follow the movement.

"Just be careful Renée," he warns and I swallow my saliva.
"If I were you I'd stay the hell away from me," he says his eyes never leaving my lips and my temper flares at his words.

"Oh I plan to stay the hell away from you! So far away in fact it will be like we're living on different planets!" I shout and he chuckles.

"Good," he smirks and I resist the urge to stick my tongue out. "Good," I mimic folding my arms and looking him squarely in the face.

He nods his head and simply gets off the stool, walking out of the kitchen and going to what I assume to be his room. I stare at his retreating figure with my mouth wide open.

What In the actual hell just happened?
