Part V

It was some time past five in the morning, still dark and cold outside of the house. The light breeze was chilly, and only a few brave birds were out to sing their songs before the morning really started.

But that wasn’t stopping Jennie.
Not even close.

She was up the minute her alarm went off, all business, as if she’d never suffered the injury in the first place. She changed, made herself a green shake, and prepared for the first rounds of real training she’d experience since her injury.

No more boots, no more casts and crutches, no more braces.

Jennie was finally returning to full form, having healed enough to finally walk around unaided again.

“Let’s go, Jennie, don’t tell me you’re soft now?” Her trainer’s voice reached Jennie over the pounding in her ears. Her own heart was beating wildly from the jogging around her yard. If Jennie had heard that prior to her injury, she would’ve been laughing at the suggestion. And now?

Now she was grateful for every last bit of evidence that she was healing.

“Soft?” Jennie growled. “I’ll show you-” She lunged forward, fingers barely grazing her trainer’s tank top before she darted out of Jennie’s path again. “Are you enjoying yourself?” Jennie snapped, but there was no malice to it whatsoever.

Her trainer snorted. “No. I don’t particularly enjoy running. But...I am enjoying these last few days of being able to outrun you before you go all superhuman again.”

Jennie’s lips quirked upwards at the choice in words.

“You did great today, baby.” Suddenly there were arms around her waist from behind, and her “trainer” was pressing a kiss to her neck. “No one expected you to be able to do so much, so quickly.”

Jennie turned, facing Jisoo with a look of pure satisfaction.

Jisoo, up at five in the morning with her, running around their massive yard in sweats and hoodie, serving as Jennie’s makeshift, at-home trainer.

Jisoo, who hated running.

Jisoo, who detested waking up early.

The same Jisoo who’d done everything and anything in her power to nurse Jennie back to health in high school, after the Jung siblings had injured her.

A lot had changed in the past few months.

Jennie had been through trials that were previously unimaginable to her. She’d questioned everything- herself, her ability to provide for her family, the shame she’d bring them if she  failed.

She’d seen ups and downs.

She’d watched people rally to support her, to come to her defense, making lofty promises that, upon her return, she’d be the greatest athlete to ever set foot in the game.

She’d also watched people tear her down, spitting on her, calling her a “mockery” to  a “man’s sport” and the like.

But Jisoo Kim was a constant, in Jennie’s life.

Ever since the two had locked eyes in Sunmi’s class, it seemed, they were inseparable.

But more than that, Jisoo always knew just how to support Jennie. How to make her feel loved and understood in times where she used to feel so desperately alone.
