His sentence makes me stop and think for a minute

His sentence makes me stop and think for a minute. I wonder what he means with doing many things wrong in his life.

Maybe his drug dealing? Or his decision not to maintain a relationship?

I decide not to ask him further, but I can't help but feel a little disappointed at his reaction. I understand his explanation, yet, I still feel rejected.

I grab my sweater as quickly as I can, and pull it back over my head. I rearrange the blanket and cover myself up. I feel the need to brush through my hair with my hands, so that's exactly what I do.

"I'm sorry Mila, okay?" he says, while trying to connect our eyes. "I just don't want you do to anything you'll regret" he adds, looking to the floor.

I can't help but feel sympathetic for him. He's really trying for me, and putting in a lot of effort. I break my cold facade and turn to him.

"Why would I regret it?" I ask him, trying to make him understand that I wouldn't.

"You know I'm new to this. I'm just trying not to fuck anything up" he says.

I really want to know what he means with this exactly, but decide that it's a conversation for another time.

"No, I'm sorry. I appreciate you putting in the effort" I say, putting my hand on his shoulder and leaning on it, which earns me a kiss on the head from Jace.

Who knew Jace Evans also had insecurities?

"Do you want to go grab some popcorn then?" Jace asks me, since he knows I still can't sit still.

"I'd like that" I tell him smiling, also giving him a kiss on the cheek.

I stand up and quickly change back into my jeans.

"Just leave my sweatpants on" Jace says, getting up to stretch a little.

"They're way too big, I look silly" I answer chuckling.

"That's right, you actually care what people think about you" he chuckles back and I stick out my tongue in his direction like a child.

Jace grabs his keys, and then we're out the door. He walks in the direction of his parking spot, wanting to take his car. Since there's a supermarket just around the corner, I convince him that we walk.

We're about halfway there, when Jace takes an incoming phone call. He takes a few steps away from me, and I know exactly why this person is calling.

"Yeah?" is what Jace says as he picks up.

I can't hear what the other person on the other line is saying, but all that Jace says next is "Not tonight. I'll text you" and then he hangs up.

Jace doesn't look at me, he just slips his phone back into his pocket.

"Was that..." I start, but he interrupts me.

"Yeah" he answers, and we're silent for a while.

It was a client. I'm glad he told them that he can't make it tonight.
