Emma could hear it; the sweet squeal Mary alway made when Father would bounce her on his knee. She was waking up to sunlight peeking through the shutters. The horse was whinnying in the barn. Could Jonathan take her riding with him today? Something was baking; oatcakes? The thought made her sit straight up and run across the room to the door. Her family was in the kitchen, just down the hall. She saw thier shadows in the morning light and scampered towards them. Her mother was calling,
"Emma, breakfast is ready!"
Emma woke to Prudie shooing the chickens away from the kitchen door. Jeremy was stabbing the air with a wooden sword. Emma was not in her old house with the family she so dearly missed, she was at Nampara. Turning on to the side of the bed, she realized; a home. A family was what made a home. She may not be part of the family that lived and worked here, but she had a roof over her head and people to take care of her. Someday, her true family would come.
