I continuously tapped my heel on the ground. I was sick and tired of sitting on my butt all the time. My body ached to move and run. I missed the freedom of running. I missed running into the Glade after a good run. I missed running back into his arms, his touch, his voice, his warmth, I missed everything about Newt. I missed my friends, my brother. I missed talking to someone. I missed eating proper food, Fry's stews, hell I even missed Gally's brew.
I wondered what my friends were doing. Maybe they'd be running away from cranks like a group of slintheads. Or maybe they'd be enjoying a plate full of food. My stomach growled at the thought of it.
Besides the annoying tapping of my foot the entire train compartment was silent. I twisted my head around, looking some of the kids in the eyes but most of them looked away faster than light. They were actually afraid of me, because they thought I'd get them into trouble. Not everyone of them but still many did.
I snapped my head to the side when I heard the sudden sound of an unfamiliar engine driving past the train. I sighed once the sound disappeared again and I hung my head forwards again. I made a popping sound with my mouth in boredom. I knew people were annoyed but hell did I care.
I gasped hearing the sound of gunshots, many of them and that my friends was like music to my ears. It gave me hope that someone knew where the hell we were. It gave me hope that someone understood the hell we were put through.
Everyone began to murmur, questioning what the gunshots meant. I felt the excitement and adrenaline rushing through my body. I looked up a the skylight in the ceiling and saw a pair of legs walking on top of it. My eyes widened and I began yelling for help.
Soon enough the train came to a stop and someone pounded against our compartment. I wasn't the only one yelling anymore and all the other kids joined in.
"We're in here!" I shouted but my voice was hoarse and nearly inaudible due to a kick to the throat I got a few days prior.
The shouting continued for several minutes until we heard some muffled voices on top of our compartment. We began moving but not forwards. We moved upwards, like we were being carried away. I held my feet steady on the ground and smirked in amusement. I kept my fingers crossed behind my back, hoping we were actually going to be rescued.
After a while we reached the ground with a loud thud. I narrowed my eyes when the sound of a place quieted down and sudden sparks of fire were seen at the door. The sound of a chain saw came from outside.
I tapped my foot rapidly and looked down when the sunlight creeped inside. A tall figure stepped into the compartment. I couldn't see who it was but knew once he spoke up. I thought I was hallucinating for a second.
"Thomas!" I yelled, my voice breaking due to my sore throat. His eyes widened and he leaped forwards, crashing me into his embrace. "Oh my god." he kept repeating. We chuckled in excitement. He pressed his face into my hair and squeezed me tightly. "It's really you." he said.
"I'm not hallucinating, am I?" I asked, Thomas shook his head and laughed. He opened my mouth to speak when my eyes caught the sight of the person I had dreamed about for so long. His hair was slightly longer and the scar on his face had almost disappeared. But the bags under his eyes seemed bigger than before.
I jumped up and nearly fell back down due to the dizziness. But Newt leaped forwards and crushed me in a bone breaking hug. It was like I was dreaming, I just hoped I wouldn't wake up.
He was silent but his heart was hammering in his chest. I pressed my face into his chest and inhaled his addictive scent. He really was here.
He pulled back and looked me in the eyes before pressing his puffy soft lips against mine. I couldn't believe it. It felt too good to be true.
Once I was outside the train he scanned me from head to toe, acknowledging how I looked so different. I bit my lip to try and hold back the excitement.
"Julia, I—"
God, the sound of his voice was even better than I remembered. I melted right on the spot and stepped forwards, leaning into his touch again.
"I missed you." I whispered. He pulled back abruptly at the sound of my hoarse voice and furrowed his eyebrows. He opened his mouth to speak but I muted any sound and kissed him on the lips.
"Little one!" Frypan squealed, I swirled around and giggled before crashing into Frypan's arms. He twirled me around, chuckling. He scanned me from head to toe once he put me down again. A grimace formed on his face. "I'm gonna kill the shanks who did this."
"You and me both, Fry."
Newt appeared again, holding an axe in his hand. He stood behind me and held me still. "Don't move, I'll remove those chains." I bit my lip and squeezed my eyes shut when the axe hit the chains. They broke and I squeaked once they were removed from my wrists.
I turned around and jumped into Newt's arms. He chuckled and twirled me around. I wrapped my legs around his chest and pressed my lips on his lovingly. It felt good having my arms free for once.
"Why were you the only one chained up so badly and what's with the black suit?" Frypan asked. I stood back on the ground and grabbed Newt's hand. I could feel him glancing at the bruises and scar on my face.
"Let's just say I was a problematic subject. They kept me locked up in isolation because I wouldn't stop breaking their noses."
"Damn girl, I couldn't be prouder." Frypan chuckled.
Thomas smiled but a sad look lingered in his eyes "Minho wasn't with you then?"
I poked my head from besides them and scanned the kids that were rescued. My heart sunk at the realisation. You had to be kidding me.
"Shit, he's been in the same facility as me ever since they took us. We even tried to escape together until they moved us to isolation and we weren't allowed to speak to anyone anymore."
I kicked my foot against the metal compartment and cursed to myself. Minho would be going to the city and I feared it was going to be his last stop. I wasn't going to stop here, Minho would've tried to save me so I was going to do the same thing.
We began making our way to their camp. I leaned into Newt's touch and exhaled long.
"What happened to you guys?" Thomas asked, he and Frypan followed us. "Day in day out they'd take our blood, sacks full of blood. They made us do these tests to train out minds. They said we were going to be the reason behind the cure. They beat us up whenever we didn't work along, I guess that's why I got these big boys." I chuckled, pointing at my black eyes.
"Yeah, you look like shit." Brenda grinned. I smirked and pulled her into a tight hug. When I pulled back I looked everyone of them in the eyes with a thankful look. "Thank you, all of you, for not giving up on us."
"Never." Newt whispered and planted a gentle kiss on my forehead. I smiled and grabbed his hand once again, it felt so safe feeling his hand in mine again.
"You don't just look like shit, you sound like shit too."
I giggled and nodded in agreement. They weren't wrong. I began explained the story of a man punching me in the throat as a return for me kicking him in the balls. They listened carefully and grimaced thinking about how painful it must've been. But honestly it was worth it.
We approached the camp, it was a dock with an enormous ship floating in the water. Thomas explained how they were getting ready to depart for safe haven. But without Minho I wasn't sure if I even wanted to go there. With him in the hands of WICKED I could never leave without worrying. Never.
