— 12 YEARS AGO —
As the bell rang loud, the sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the schoolyard, signalling the end of the day. A sea of middle schoolers poured out of the school gates with excited chatter filling the air as many rushed to their waiting guardians.
Among the bustling crowd of fellow tweens, you and Seokjin walked side by side, your small hand gripping the strap of your yellow backpack as you skipped along the familiar pavement, leaving the school grounds whilst you told him about the new friends you made this week, two new kids in your class named Kim Namjoon and Kim Taehyung who were brothers that moved to the neighbourhood just recently.
Seokjin kept pace beside you, his gaze naturally flicking to you every now and then to make sure you weren't getting too close to the road as you hopped along while still letting you be and listening to you.
However, he could easily sense your mood was not as it appeared to be despite your efforts to make it seem otherwise. With how your eyes were darting around the ground as if you were desperately searching for something there, it wasn't too hard to sense something was up.
"I'm telling you, Jinnie! Kim Namjoon is going to be number one in the whole grade, I can just feel it," you tried to continue your story enthusiastically even though your voice hinted at being uneasy and sad despite your contradictory skipping.
Finally deciding that he couldn't let you continue like this, Jin stopped in his tracks with a sigh and waited for your turn to look at him.
Realising that the boy had suddenly stopped walking, you also stopped and turned curiously to meet his eyes.
