ANNE SHIRLEY Cuthbert frolicked around the garden, taking in the sunshine that made her eyes twinkle. The sunlight made her skin warm, her cheeks pink. The bright light made the world light up, like a bunch of tiny little fireflies bundled into one.
"Oh sky. You seem so bright today. The sun just seems to light you up. I think the sun is your kindred spirit." Anne talked to the sky as she laid out onto the grass.
She watched as the clouds formed into shapes. One a book, as Anne would like to imagine. The other formed the shape of a heart. Anne liked that one.
"What are you doing Anne?" Diana appeared over Anne, smiling.
"Looking at the clouds and the shapes they form." Anne stood up, dusting off any excess dirt that could of caught onto her dress.
"What shapes do they form?" Diana said as the two strolled into the orchard.
"Well, I like to believe they form whatever shape you imagine. A heart may look like a fruit to another." Anne explained, and Diana nodded.
"Interesting. I think that one looks like a ribbon." Diana pointed to one. Anne looked up.
"It does! This reminds me of our first walk when we met. You interrogated me on whether or not I liked the cake you baked. I believe I said it was scrumptious." Anne giggled.
"You did. That was the day we swore to each other. I think I'll always be very glad you came to Avonlea. You showed me the beautiful things in life." Diana said, smiling.
"I can't imagine life in Avonlea without you." Anne said, and the two laughed.
The two girls heard a twig snap. They both jumped, immediately clinging onto each other. Diana's eyes widened with fright, while Anne couldn't move.
"A-Anne? Do we run or do we hide?" Diana asked.
"It's probably ju-just an animal or something. But we best be on our way." Anne said, as she turned both of them around. They started walking, their pace faster than normal.
"Ah, so I'm an animal now?" Anne froze. That voice. She knew who that voice belonged to. His voice. She turned around and gasped. Her hands flew to her mouth as tears rolled down her cheek.
"Gilbert." Anne said, and started running towards him. Diana chases after her, her mouth hung open.
Anne grabbed Gilbert, pulling him into her arms. He smiled, his hands on her mid back. He pulled slightly away, grabbing her face in the process. He leaned forward, placing his lips onto hers.
It was sweet. More passionate than the ones they shared before Gilbert left. Her hands wrapped around his neck.
Diana stood there, speechless. She smiled, and walked away, deciding to give Anne and Gilbert privacy to speak with each other.
As she walked away, the two pulled apart. Tears in their eyes, as their hands stayed intertwined.
"I missed you so much. Every single day I wondered what you were doing, and if you missed me as much as I missed you." Gilbert said, squeezing Anne's hands.
Anne hugged him, taking deep breathes.
"I've missed you too. I didn't want to wait any longer, I also definitely missed you more." Anne separated from him. They began to walk toward the building of Queens.
"Not possible." Gilbert winked.
"How is Toronto?" Anne asked, grabbing his hand and locking their fingers. Gilbert sighed. He still wasn't used to Anne's affection. He felt like the luckiest man in the world, a bold statement.
"Beautiful. Different from Avonlea. But, I can't bring myself to like any of the people there, because they aren't you." Gilbert said and Anne nodded.
"You have to promise me you will try to find friends, Gilbert. How is your roommate?" Anne asked.
"Well...he's definitely not what I thought my roommate would be like. I think I should try and get to know him better." Gilbert came to a conclusion.
"Do you guys have similar interests?" Anne asked, tilting her head.
"Well- yes, but he likes to talk about girls. All the time." Gilbert complained.
"What is his sweetheart like?" Anne tripped over a rock, and steadied herself, swatting away Gilbert's hands who were trying to help her.
"Haven't met her. He says her name is Maria, and then he just says a bunch of attributes. She sounds like she's got no personality." Gilbert shrugged his shoulders.
"Well that's not very nice!" Anne laughed.
"It's the truth!" Gilbert chuckled.
"Have you talked about me?" Anne asked, smirking.
"Well, no. I don't want him questioning me about you and then finding out how dead gone I am! I don't want him to tease me like Bash does!" Gilbert blushed.
"Well, Gilbert Blythe, the truth will reveal itself one day!"
The two found themselves at Queens, Gilbert took a deep breath.
"Well, I've got to go see Bash, and unpack. Then I'll maybe visit Charlie and Moody. But, I'll be back. Meet me at the fountain, tomorrow when the 12 o' clock bell strikes." Gilbert says, with a small smile on his face. He kissed her cheek before leaving.
