AU: Medieval
She watched as he slowly approached the throne. He mainly looked to the floor, only once to look up and smile at the cheering crowd. She knew he didn't want to be honored in such a grand manner, but her parents insisted a ceremony be held for his bravery.
Several weeks before:
Y/n had to find out what was wrong in her kingdom. For the past week guards came with reports of mysterious things happening, mainly that the crops were all going rotten. Sure, it is normal for things to go bad, but it was happening to all the farmers at an alarmingly fast rate. If this kept happening, the kingdom would crumble. Not only were the crops going bad, but people were going missing. Her parents sent out the best knights in the kingdom to try and solve the mystery, but none had returned with any progress.
She decided to go out to the people herself and try to find out anything that could be going on. She took her favorite horse and snuck off in the night. When she got to the first farm, she noticed one of the servants, Steven.
He was with some of the children she secretly trained, so they'd be able to be knights one day.
"William?"
They all turned around each with their own expression of shock.
"Y/n... What are you doing here?"
"Apparently the same thing you all are doing. I want answers, and I can't just keep waiting. I was hoping I'd be able to find them."
"We wanted to find answers too. We don't want our families to go missing. We don't want anyone to go missing anymore." Mike replied.
Y/n nodded and looked to where they were previously looking. A big hole took the place of the pumpkins.
"We think this is the main hole. Holes are all over every farmers plot of land. This is the biggest hole by far. Tonight we're going to go down it to see where it leads." Dustin informed.
Y/n nodded, and they all began to light torches before they finally descended the hole. Steve stood watch making sure all the children were safe. Then, he looked to y/n.
"Princess... It's your turn."
Y/n walked to him and shook her head. "How many times am I going to tell you to call me y/n?"
"Probably till the end of our lives princess."
She rolled her eyes and stole Steve's torch. She went down the hole where the kids were waiting. She knew Steve was beside her. She turned around to see him holding his hand out. She frowned and handed him the torch. He smiled as the group began to walk.
"I didn't know you were friends with the party."
"The party?"
Y/n laughed staying close to Steve. "Yes. That's the name I gave them. So when I tell my parents I'm off to a party, they think I'm doing princess things."
"When your actually training the boys and girls fighting skills. You're sneaky princess."
She rubbed her arms "I... I don't mean to be. It's just... We all want things we can't have. They want to be knights... And I..."
"Don't want to be a princess and future queen."
She nodded and looked to the children. "I thought that even though I can't have what I want, maybe I could help them."
"Well I also meant the fact you know how to fight. Princess normally don't fight." He sarcastically spoke, "So how did you learn?"
"My cousin just so happens to be a knight. He's been teaching me ever since I turned six years old. It's been our little secret... Steven you better not tell anyone."
"I won't tell a soul princess."
Y/n sighed as she tried to walk faster. He caught up to her, and she slowed down again.
"Steven, how did you and the kids become so close?"
Steve took a long time to respond. "I don't really know. They were having an adventure, and I kinda got thrown in. I took an oath to keep them safe. Then I found out that they were being trained to be knights by a certain princess, and it got hard to keep the oath. I wanted to talk with you about it, but I promised the kids to never tell anyone especially you."
"It's okay Steven. I can already see how much they mean to you as they do to me. I'm sorry I'm making it hard for you, but I believe in them. I know you do too."
"I know you both are having a moment and all, but we think we found something." Max broke the conversation, and they both felt heat rise to their cheeks.
They walked closer to realize they were now out of the hole, and it looked like a entirely different world. They appeared to be on a cliff of a mountain. They were fixing to begin their journey down, when they heard multiple howls of wolves.
That's when they saw wolves larger than they had ever seen. Y/n got her sword and gave it to Steve, then she got her daggers. Lucas got his slingshot. The others grabbed their own weapons.
"William, Jane, I think it's time you both get ready to use your powers."
"What... Powers?" Steve exclaimed.
Wolves began to come from all over. Steve and y/n tried to make sure the wolves didn't attack the kids. That's when y/n let out a scream. A wolf had managed to claw her back and left arm. She felt herself going weak and Will caught onto her trying to use his powers to heal her.
Then everything went dark. She woke up to see the kids surrounding her. They smiled and got very excited to see her awake.
"Are you okay?" Jane asked.
"I still hurt, but I think so. Thanks for healing me Will."
"I didn't do that much honestly. After you got injured, Steve went heroic. He got rid of so many wolves the rest fled. He carried you out and made sure we were all safe. Then he brought you here to the healers."
"He was so brave. I know it had to be hard handling that sword."
"I don't understand."
"I'll tell her. Kids, can we have a minute?"
They all nodded and one by one left. Steve sat down beside her and looked at his hands.
"I'm sorry princess."
"Why? I'm the one who decided to leave the castle."
"It's not that. Look, what you saw it's been here before."
"I never told you, but I was close to becoming a knight. Around the time, all of this started showing up. I saw the kids and followed them to find those same wolf creatures. One of those things was about to get Dustin and..."
He pulled his sleeve up to reveal scars. "Looks like we'll both have matching scars. It put me out for weeks. Then when I was going to finally be a knight, I failed. I saw those things, and it brought back the memory."
Y/n reached out and grabbed his hand. "Thank you for telling me Steven. And thank you for saving my life."
Steve got up and walked to the door. "Of course princess."

Steve made his way to the king and queen. They made a speech taking about his courage and care for the kingdom, the kids, and you.
Y/n was the one who was to present the medal to Steve. She walked to him with the medal and looked into Steve's eyes. She smiled and placed the pin on his coat. Everyone applauded, and after a few more words from y/n's father, the ceremony ended.
People scattered, and y/n and Steve remained. She reached down and grabbed his hand.
"I'm so proud of you.... You mean so much to the kids, and you mean a lot to me Steve, more than you will ever know."
Steve raised y/n's hand and placed a kiss on the top. "And you mean more to me than you'll ever know my princess, y/n."
