michael was bored.

usually he would take a trip to devon's place but she was spending the day with marina. marina had claimed that "michael was hogging her one and only friend and she deserved some time with devon too you overprotective yet dream boyfriend."

so michael was left alone, tired and cranky in his bedroom.

his parents had made a mental note not to bother him because they knew better. they had resulted in only talking to him occasionally, which is in fact the exact opposite of what michael had wanted. he was simply there to them, and he had learned to accept that.

he couldn't help but think of how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with devon. she was the only one who truly understood him and didn't judge him (disregarding their first few encounters, of course). but of course, he also knew that he was too young for this kind of commitment. he wanted to wait even though he was almost certain that she was the one.

on the other side of town, devon was at marina's house, gossipping about anything and everything there was to talk about. "did i tell you about that new kid in my finance class. his name is luke and he has the prettiest blue eyes i've ever seen," marina said excitedly, and devon could almost picture the imaginary drool pouring out of her friend's mouth.

"oh yeah, he's a cutie all right," devon nodded, shoving another monstrous handful of chips.

marina gave her a confused look. "wait, you know him?"

devon raised an eyebrow. "course i do," she tried saying, but through her mouthful of food it came out as something like, "cuss ah do."

"sorry, i don't speak caveman."

"go have your period in a shark tank."

the two continued playfully bickering when the topic of michael was somehow brought up. "things are getting pretty serious, huh? i mean, i had to practically pay him to let you come over today," marina said with fake annoyance.

devon frowned. "i guess it is? i mean i haven't given it much thought." she was surprised at how fluid the lie came out of her mouth, but she didn't want to seem like one of those girls who was madly in love at such a young age. that wasn't what she was known for. she was supposed to be a heartbreaker.

"wait, do you smell that?" marina asked, sniffing her nose and crinkling her eyebrows.

"what?"

"smells like bullshit. i know you guys are, like, madly in love and you're just afraid to admit it because god knows why. if you don't get married then i might just scare away all your boyfriends after that because honey, that boy isn't going anywhere anytime soon."

devon snorted, laying back on marina's bed with a satisfactory grin. "i wasn't planning on letting go of him anyway."

and that's when she almost admitted it to her friend too. that she was in love. the one person in the whole entire world who deserved love the most had found it. and that in itself was both frightening and beautiful to her.

she was in love with an idiot but for once, that idiot loved her back.

as night approaches, we hop back over to the other side of town (again) to where michael lays sulking in his bed. "she said she'd only have her till six," he grumbled to himself, watching old reruns of american horror story in utter boredom.

he had to admit that if he were gay, he would happily do the dirty with evan peters. just saying.

and hours ticked by one by one, and michael grew restless. he had almost finished season one when his phone began to ring, signaling that someone was calling him. he found this particularly odd because no one ever called him anymore except for his parents, who were about as old as the sun.

an unfamiliar name flashed across the screen and it took him a few moments to realize who it was. marina? he picked up cautiously, not sure if this was some sort of prank call.

"hello?"

"michael," marina answered, her voice laced with panic and fear, "listen to me. it's devon. oh my god, i'm so sorry, i only just got here and - "

"marina, what happened? just tell me what happened!"

there was a long pause on the other line and michael heard her loud breathing - which sounded like she was on the verge of a breakdown - that was amplified by the many sirens in the background.

"she's been in a bad accident and i don't know if she's going to be okay."
