SCENE 5

EXT. The Attempt

The camera follows TODD from behind as he walks straight towards MARLIE. MARLIE, unaware of TODD's intentions, says goodbye to her friends as she walks backward, waving goodbye. As she finishes, she turns to face TODD, standing in front of her.

MARLIE

Oh! Sorry!

MARLIE walks past TODD, believing that she was in his way. TODD, realizing that he didn't get her attention, calls on MARLIE.

TODD

Wait, Marlie!

MARLIE turns around, surprised to see TODD approaching her. Both are a few steps from each other, in the middle of the hallway.

MARLIE

Um, Todd. Isn't it?

TODD

Y- yeah. Yes. Todd, I am- I mean- I'm Todd.

MARLIE

(chuckle)

Wait, were you in Mrs. Godino's first-grade class?

TODD

Yeah! I'm surprised that you remembered.

MARLIE

So, what's up?

TODD

Huh?

MARLIE

Is there anything you wanted to say? I mean, you stopped me for something, right?

TODD

Yeah... well, (mutters) "homecoming is just around the corner..."

MARLIE

What?

TODD tries again but still mutters.

TODD

(mutters)

Since homecoming is coming...

MARLIE

(patient)

Are you okay?

Panicking, TODD bursts out.

TODD

Listen, since the dance- Homecoming dance is coming up, I was just wondering- even though you don't have to do this but at the same time I hope you do- I mean, I don't want to force on your will to this, but-

MARLIE

(confused)

Are you trying to-

TODD

I like you. I liked you ever since first-grade. You are the first girl I liked. But I don't want to make it awkward to you because I know you and Xavier are dating-

MARLIE

Todd, wait-

TODD

I know, I know. This must be very awkward for you. But, this is taking a huge toll on me! I'm telling you how I feel! Also, Xavier is like one hundred pounds more muscular than me and if this doesn't work out, he might as well beat the crap out of me after hearing this-
