Work had been more stressful than usual as of late. Maybe it was because the last lead turned up absolutely nothing. The taskforce was making slow if any, progress. Or maybe it was because everyone was more annoying than usual. Obviously, stress leads to conflict and tension. Conflict and tension lead, more often than not, to disagreements and arguments. Hence the situation you found yourself in.

"Carrot cake is the equivalent of eating vegetables," L stated nonchalantly after you offered him a piece.

"What? No," You said, defending a perfectly valid kind of cake. "Carrot cake is amazing."

"You don't know what you're talking about," L explained, dismissing your point.

"Cake is literally in the name," You reminded him, starting to find his pickiness annoying.

"Carrot is literally in the name," L reminded you.

"And what's the problem with that?" You asked, raising an eyebrow. "Vegetables are good for you, it doesn't throw off the balance of the dessert, and it's still sweet!"

"It's still the equivalent of eating vegetables," L stated. He wasn't raising his volume, he hardly ever did, but you could tell he was getting somewhat aggravated. When you discussed sweets in such a manner, L often got passionate.

"No, it's not!" You urged, almost laughing.

"(Y/n), you're not listening," L insisted, turning away from his monitor.

"I'm listening just fine, you're point is just invalid!" You repeated your original statement, not backing down from your stance. L was very aware you were stubborn.

"No, you're not," L said slowly, taking a breath. "You've always had an issue with listening." You paused at his words, they took a moment to set in. You tilted your head, furrowing your brows in confusion.

"What?" You asked after a minute of silence.

"Nothing," L quickly muttered, looking to drop the topic as soon as possible. He realized quickly he should not have said that.

"No, you--you said I have a problem with listening," You stated, still a little in disbelief. "Do you think I don't listen to you?" You felt hurt. You tried your best to always listen and understand, but now you were second-guessing all of it. If L said it, then he must believe it. You were one of the only people he refused to lie to.

"Sometimes you have the tendency to space out," L explained, carefully wording his sentences. "If you don't find it interesting, you won't really pay the most attention to it."

"Oh... " You cleared your throat. "I, um, didn't know I did that." You felt embarrassed that you didn't know and ashamed you would occasionally do such a thing. You scratched the back of your neck and avoided eye contact. L noticed that you were growing uncomfortable.

"Don't feel bad, please, it really isn't such a big deal," L said, not wanting to be the cause of your distress. "It is just something you have to be aware of." You couldn't help but get a condescending vibe from L's words, which only made you feel worse. Although, that was not his intention.

"You do it too, ya know," You pointed out, your volume low.

"At least I'm aware I do it," L remarked a bit sassily. "I am only interested in things that are important, so I don't see a problem with it." You couldn't help but notice his choice of words. You folded your arms over your chest and shifted to put your weight on one foot.

"You've zoned out when I've been talking before," You explained, not going to put up with his snide tone. "I suppose that what I have to say isn't all that important then." L was very caught off guard by your statement. Of course, no one would be able to tell that fact.

"That's not what I meant," L said, calmly looking over to where you stood.

"Then what did you mean?" You asked. However, you did not receive an instant answer. In fact, L didn't give an answer at all. He looked away, placing his thumb against his bottom-lip. You rolled your eyes and sighed.

"Well, I'm sorry to bore you," You said slightly irritated. You promptly headed for the door, although you were chased with an exasperated "(Y/n)." You just needed some time alone to clear your head and get some air.
