Weeks passed and the sun finally appeared. It was the end of the first year at school for Jane and Constance, and it went quite well! Jane worked hard and managed to validate her year, meaning she would be with her friends the next year. Constance was accepted in many colleges, but as she had to take care of Jane, she would stay with her and find a work. She didn't mind, Jane was her priority, and being sure she had a future was a relief for her, and Jane seemed really happy to be here, finally having a stable life.
Joyce invited the two girls to spend the day at home, especially because she had a surprise for them, hoping they would like it.
Constance, Jane, Will, and Jonathan were sitting around the table, eating cookies to celebrate the beginning of the holidays when Joyce arrived:
- "Hey, boys, you don't mind letting us for a moment?"
- "Sure," smirked the two boys.
Jonathan and Will stood with a big smile and waved to them before disappearing in the corridor.
- "Did we do something wrong?" asked shyly Jane with a low voice.
- "No, sweetheart, it's ok, everything is ok," reassured the mother. "I just need to ask you something. Since I saw you the first time, Jane, I've never forgotten about you and what I could-no, what I should have done years ago."
- "Don't do that!" got angry Constance.
- "I didn't say anything!"
- "You're trying to separate us!"
- "No! I'm not! Let me finish, I promise you it's not the goal, ok? I would never separate two sisters, it's awful!"
Constance crossed her arms and leaned against the chair, waiting for her to continue.
- "So, as I said, I always wanted to help you, and having both of you at home made me understand what you needed: a safe place with a family."
Constance frowned and looked at Jane who had eyes full of stars.
- "I wanna know if you would accept to become...my daughters?"
Jane wide opened her eyes and mouth before turning to her sister and shaking her arm with energy.
- "Say yes! Please say yes! Say yes! Say yeeeeees!" begged Jane.
- "You can't just ask us that and snap your fingers to have what you want! There is a process to follow!"
- "I know, and I made all of them! You remember Annabelle? (Both nods) She works in an adoption agency, she was there because she wanted to meet you, then, she helped me with the paperwork and all the asks that I had to do. Everything is clear. Now, all you have to do is to say yes or no, I'm not forcing you, I'm just proposing," explained Joyce.
Jane turned to her sister, hoping her to accept. Constance swallowed with difficulties before nodding. Jane took her sister in her arms of happiness before jumping from her chair and taking Joyce in her arms.
- "You're my new mom!" stated happily Jane.
- "Yes, I guess I am," smiled Joyce.
The mother looked up at Constance who was still on her chair, looking away.
- "Jane, what do you think about joining Will for a moment, so I can talk to your sister, ok?"
- "I'm gonna call Max to tell her!"
Jane ran in the corridor before joining Will in his room. Joyce stood and sat next to the teen.
- "Why would you want to adopt me!? I mean, I'm old, I'm not cute, or nice, or-"
- "Just because you're not like Jane doesn't mean you can't be loved," cut Joyce. "Those people who always chose your sisters over you were...not real parents, real parents would have understood that two sisters had to stick together, no matter what, it was not human to separate you from her, especially after what you both lived."
Joyce understood that Constance was avoiding eyes contact because she had tears in her eyes. The mother rubbed the girl's back before kissing her temple.
- "I won't call you mom, Jane will, but not me."
- "I know that," smiled Joyce. "I'm not asking you anything, just to let me take of you and Jane. And, I heard you had some admittances in colleges, you can't miss that, right?"
- "I guess...but what about Jane?"
- "She will understand, and, she is not alone anymore, she will know where you are, it will be different, ok?"
Constance nodded.
- "Jonathan and Will are ok with that?" frowned Constance.
- "More than ok. Everything will be fine, you'll see," reassured Joyce.
The blonde teen was feeling a bit stupid. For months she thought Joyce wanted to adopt only Jane, she never thought one second that she wanted to adopt both. She was so happy and relieved to finally have a stable place for Jane with a trustful family.
- "Are you ok?" asked softly the mother.
- "Yeah, yeah, I'm ok, I just need some time," weakly smiled Constance.
While Joyce and Constance were talking about this news, Jane and Will were jumping everywhere in his bedroom, happy to be siblings.
- "You'll have me on your back every day!" told Jane.
- "And me on yours!" answered Will. "It was my wish for my birthday!"
- "Really!? That's why it worked! I'm glad you didn't tell everyone!"
- "Me too!"
Jane hit Will's bag and fell on the floor, making a loud "BOOM" heard by the entire house.
- "I'm ok!" said loudly the young girl.
The two kids giggled. After a moment, they joined Joyce, Constance, and Jonathan in the living-room. Jane was really happy to finally call them family. And now she had everything she wanted: a family, a bedroom with her own bed, a garden for Dog, and friends. It was perfect, she knew everything would be alright now, Constance wouldn't have to stress all the time, she could relax in her bedroom and sleep peacefully!
It was all they needed; their future was bright now.
