Betty Cooper walked through the halls of Riverdale High slowly, with her head tilted down. She could practically feel people whispering about her wherever she went. Not only was she fat and ugly, but now her father was also known to be the Black Hood, the notorious Serial Killer. She felt even more self-conscious than usual.

Finally, after what seemed like a walk of shame that lasted an eternity, she got to where she and her friends sat at lunch.

“Hey Betty,” Veronica greeted her, “No Jughead today?”

Ah Jughead, her knight in shining armor, her light in the dark. He always stood up for her and made her feel better whenever anyone bullied her. She smiled just thinking about him. She would never understand how or why he would ever want to be with her.

“No, I think he had to make up a test or something.”

“Ok, have a seat, what’re you having?”

“I actually already ate at the Blue and Gold,” Betty lied, “I’ll just have an apple now.”

She sat down and tried to push her hunger out of her mind as she talked and laughed with her best friends. As their lunch period ended, she felt a little bit better.

That afternoon, she went home, did her homework, ate a small dinner and went to bed, her usual routine.

The next morning, she dragged herself out of bed, did her hair and makeup, and practically crawled downstairs to get ready for school.

As she packed her lunch, she heard the doorbell ring. She wondered who it could be at such an early hour. She walked to the door, saw who it was, and smiled.

“Hi Jughead, what are you doing here?”

“Hey Betty, I feel like I didn’t see you much yesterday, so I thought I’d walk you to school.”

“Great thanks, I’ll get my stuff.”

They walked together into the school courtyard, hand in hand, as they talked about random events of the previous day. Betty was pretty sure he was the only person who could make her smile so much. Her smile dropped when she saw two freshman girls whispering and pointing at her, not very subtly either.

“What does he even see in her? She’s not even that pretty.”

Jughead noticed it too.

“Ignore them, Betty, if they have nothing better to do with their lives than judge other people, you have to let them be because this is all they have,” he said, very loudly, to make sure everyone around them heard him.

She nodded and gave him a small smile, but inside she was crying. What had she done to them? It wasn’t her fault she was fat, it’s not like she didn’t try to lose weight. She exercised, ate healthily, and did whatever she could but at the end of the day, it just wasn’t enough.

He put his arm around her shoulder reassuringly and glared at the girls. She looked down as they walked into the school.

“I’ll see you at lunch Betty, Blue and Gold?”
