"What if she doesn't like me?"

"Trust me Gob, it'll be fine."

"What about your dad?"

"He'll like you. Now come on, they're waiting."

I grabbed his hand gently, and went to the door, knocking loud enough for them to hear. Me and Gob had been together for about a year, and now he was ready to meet my parents (or so he said when we left the house). He wore his regular clothes and I wore mine, since we were just coming over for a casual night. I heard some whispers, then the door opened. Both my parents stood, looking tired as always. My mother immediately ushered us inside, "Come on inside, I made dinner."

She went off to get plates and my dad smiled, "Actually, I made it. She just bought the materials." He looked to me, "Remember last time she cooked?" I smiled at the memory, and he cleared his throat, looking to Gob, "So, young man, you think you have what it takes to date my kid?"

I looked to Gob, who froze on the spot. He blushed, looking to me, "Yes? Maybe? I think so..."

My dad hummed in response and held out a hand. Gob shook, and my dad smiled, "Good grip. Your hands are rough. You a working man?"

Gob smiled a little, "They're rough because I'm a ghoul sir, but yes, I work."

My dad smiled, "Got a sense of humor, huh? I think we'll get along fine." I didnt really get the joke, but I smiled anyways. "Come on in the kitchen and sit down." My father led us to our kitchen. Gob sat next to me, and my parents sat across, so I was facing my father, and Gob was facing my mother. My mother sat with her arms crossed, eyeing my boyfriend suspiciously. My father mentioned something about how he cooked the food, and we started eating. Conversation between my father and Gob flowed smoothly, and he was happy to know that Gob worked in a bar, since he was a fan of different types of liquor and wine. My mother sat back with her eyes narrowed, and I noticed Gob looking to her nervously every now and then.

My mother looked to me, and I made a face, the expression I held told her to be nice. She smiled, and leaned forward, "So are you two thinking of having kids?"

I blushed, and frowned at her, "Ghouls are sterile, mom."

She batted her lashes, "Well, you can always adopt."

I smiled, "If you want grandkids, you'll have to get them from my brother. Me and Gob are actually looking for a pet to buy. Maybe a fish or a dog or something."

My father agreed that a mongrel was good for watching the house, and Gob said something about it. My mom noticed that her husband was warming up to Gob, and frowned, cutting in again, "So, Gob, you work at a bar, right? You get into many fights?"

He shook his head, "No ma'am, but I usually get a punch or two when breaking them up."

"How much do you make? Money-wise, I mean."

I frowned, knowing that Moriarty hardly paid anyone anything. Gob just finished working there, and was currently looking for a job. I spoke for him, "He makes enough to keep us in a home and fed. Mom, can I talk to you?"

My dad said something about how he used to be a bartender, and I walked to my old room, my mother following. I shut the door behind her, whisper-yelling, "What's your issue?!"

"What's my issue?! What's your issue?! You're dating a ghoul for christ-sakes!"

I frowned, "You better watch what you say. He may be a ghoul but he's the nicest guy I've ever met." She rolled her eyes, and I scowled, "He was a slave, mom. He was imprisoned for a few years, and I only recently bought his contract. He's working on getting a job, so we're going through a rough patch right now, and I'd appreciate it if you'd play nice."

She sighed, thinking for a while before looking to me, "You really like him?"

"Yeah, mom. Otherwise I wouldn't have brought him to meet you guys."

"Fine. But I'm keeping an eye on you two! No funny-business under the table!"

I blushed, "Mom! Cut it out! Now come on, I don't want our men getting too friendly on the first date."

She smiled a little and we walked back out, making the excuse that I was telling her about some personal business. Gob was sure to ask more about it later, but I could think of an excuse later. We eventually finished up, and Gob, with his experience in the kitchen, helped my mother do dishes. We were back on the doorstep, and I hugged my parents as a good-bye. Gob shook their hands likewise. They closed the door, thus me and Gob began to walk home. It wasn't a long walk. He grabbed my hand, "I like your dad."

"Yeah, so do I."

"Your mom... she doesn't like me too much, does she?"

"It's not that she doesn't like you. It's just... ever since we were kids, she was always talking about having grandkids. I think kids are a burden, and you're sterile, so she's just a little disappointed."

"And your brother?"

I laughed, "He's gay. She doesn't know it yet, but he and his husband are talking about adopting, so either way she'll be getting what she wants." We walked in comfortable silence for a while, before he told me he loved me, and kissed me. I was pretty sure that I heard my mom shouting at us, even if we were almost three blocks away from their house.
