in the midst of my working,
i heard his voice cut through the air.
"y/n! y/n! it came!"
i pulled myself out of the trance i was in and met pope at the front of the restaurant,
where he waved a piece of mail sent by our future college.
"oh, my god! yes! finally!"
i exclaimed,
feeling my nerves rise for him.
the college we had both applied for;
our future now lied inside the envelope.
he quickly opened the folded letter,
leaving me to watch in anticipation while his eyes scanned the words.
"i got in!"
he said breathlessly.
pope's eyes fell to mine,
wide and ringed with excitement,
making me burst with pride.
"of course you did!"
i cheered with him while pulling him into an embrace before we began our victory jumping.
"i'm so proud of you, love!"
i said into the crook of his neck,
feeling his arms tighten around me and hug me closer.
pope then pulled me back to join in on a kiss that was well deserved.
i was so pumped with joy that i began giggling into our kiss,
which made him chuckle.
"thank you, it would have been nearly impossible without you. now, we just wait for your acceptance letter."
he said with a hopeful smile that i couldn't help but return.
i walked myself back behind the register,
where i had been prior,
and nodded.
"i suppose."
pope leaned across the counter and pressed a kiss to my forehead.
"you're going to get in. i'll pick you up after work today, okay?"
he reassured while fixing the hat on his head.
"we're celebrating tonight. don't think you can get out of it either,"
i called as he began waking out.
my smile hadn't faded in the slightest,
making him laugh with a sheepish ring.
"of course, of course."
***
a sigh of relief escaped my lips as i clocked out.
my feet were beginning to ache from standing on them all day,
along with my back.
but all of it soon melted away once i fell into the arms of my love,
who had been waiting outside for me like he promised.
"long day?"
he asked while hugging me tightly.
i nodded then looked up to press a gentle kiss to his lips.
he smiled at the action then planted an innocent, loving peck just above my eyebrow.
"you ready to go?"
"yeah, i'm ready."
pope opened the door for me,
where i was left to climb into his passenger seat.
when he started the car,
music began playing quietly.
"so how are we celebrating, my love?"
he inquired while pulling out of the restaurants parking lot.
"a pogue bonefire, of course."
"sounds perfect,"
he said with a bright smile,
all while reaching for my hand to hold.
we sat in content silence for a while longer with the music filling the space.
then i said,
"i'm so proud of you, pope."
"thank you, love. i can't wait to start college with you."
i fell quiet for a few beats.
"...do you think i'll get in?"
"i don't have a doubt about it. they'd be the worlds biggest idiots not to accept you. you're an asset, my love. you're practically a genius."
pope turned his head towards me for a split second to offer me a smile,
which made me laugh in return.
we arrived to the bonfire to greet our friends who were already beside themselves with intoxication.
"there's our boy!"
jj cheered,
saluting in pope's honor with a liquor filled cup.
everyone followed jj's actions,
all of our cups meeting in the middle to hear john b say,
"to pope and y/n, the only two who are making it out of the cut!"
all of our drinks echoed as they clinked together.
pope wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me close to his side to rest a kiss against my temple.
i had never seen a smile so bright or true;
how ravishing it was.
"this is the greatest day of my life. college acceptance, my friends are here, you."
"me?"
i echoed.
he looked to me then rolled his eyes,
as though i were insane to think otherwise.
"of course, you. you're the greatest thing to have ever happened to me. i'm a better man because of you."
my heart swelled at the sound of his words,
settling inside of my memory to be pulled out when i wanted.
"you're amazing,"
i said with a gentle laugh.
our lips met in the middle for a sweet kiss while the sounds of the waves traveled through the air,
perfecting the moment.

the next few days went by the same,
i worked,
pope worked,
the rest of the pogues did their thing,
coming together at the end of the day to party,
and i continued to anticipate my college letter.
"y/n, you've got mail,"
my father announced as he walked into the front door,
fresh home from work.
"thank you,"
i said while taking it into my grasp.
the college label was bright and bold in the corner of the envelope to match the same one popes envelope had days prior.
i felt my heart sink in both excitement and sheer terror.
there was a doubt lingering inside of me,
telling me to give my hopes up now before they were crushed.
but pope...
he was so confident in me.
surely it meant that i could be sure of my acceptance too,
right?
without wasting another second,
i grabbed my phone and hurried to text pope with shaky hands:
