Chapter 10

Sister, pardon me to disturb you during your trip but I have a news. Father has collapsed due to his illness since he has came back from the war against the fallen empire. It seems he has been holding it but it did not last longer than he thought. As for me, I am doing well. You do not have to worry about the family’s state since Joaquim is here. I just hope you still can enjoy the trip, Sister. I miss you, please come back safely. I love you, Sister.

“Well...” I blinked.

Did they really expect me to enjoy the trip? With Heiden? No way.

“Is there a problem, my lady?”

“I do not know if this should be urgent or not.” I handed her the parchment. Sumampa ako sa aking kama at bumuntong-hininga.

“Shouldn’t we go back?”

“Mmm...” I tapped my fingers.

“The second prince may be considerate to go back early.” Tumaas ang aking kilay sa kanyang sinabi.

“Well, that may be the case. But he will stay if he let me go.” I rested my face in my hand. Napangisi ako. The picture of Heiden reacting to what he will say when he founds out about it made me snort. “We will not go back. I am not sure if he have gotten that news since it is confidential but let us not tell him.”

“Yes, my lady.” Hilda nodded. “How about young master?”

“Oh.”

“You forgot.” She tilted her head. Kumurap lamang ako.

“I will have to make up for him once we go back. Well, it is Alluis we are talking about. He will not falter over Father’s condition. A future head should be calm and unnerving.” Kalmado kong sagot.

“You really are merciless, my lady.” She shook her head.

“Ngayon mo lang ba iyan naisip?” Itinaas ko ang aking mga tuhod.

“Will you even falter if something happens to the crown prince?” Napaawang ang aking bibig sa kanyang biglang sinabi. Hindi ako makasagot. I ended up scoffing.

That question lingered on my mind pretty long. Nawala rin sa isip ko nang lumabas kami upang tingnan ang kalagayan ng kaharian ng Lodia.

As it is similar to our kingdom, it is a a bit lower-leveled than ours. Here, their dark side is more visible. Even if I said Ronschwald kingdom is cleaner at hiding dark sides, it does not make either kingdoms better.

“Lodia is pretty disgusting.” So is the other kingdoms.

I fixed the hood of my cloak out of habit. I was about to turn when a pig-faced man blocked my way. He smiled that his bad breath reached my nose. I did not hide my disgusted face. I covered my nose and took a step back away from him.

This is not getting me into my mood.

“Magandang hapon.” He grinned.

It was obvious what his aim is. He wants to catch me, a person standing higher than him.

More guys like him appeared beside him showing their intentions with their disgusting, obvious faces. Napairap ako. I snapped my fingers. Davidron handed me his sword and I instantly pointed it at them. Napasigaw sila at napa-atras. It was not long before they calmed down seeing that it was a girl holding a sword.

I am pretty much insulted because they do not expect women to wield or even hold a sword. Lodia is a strict kingdom that men is what runs it.

Sa isang iglap ay tumambad na ang kanilang mga duguang katawan sa ibaba. I pointed the sword at the neck of the last one standing, the first man who approached me gave out a frightened look. Shook and cannot tell what is going on anymore, he peed on his trousers. I clicked my tongue at this disgusting pig.

“I would like to personally torture you for disgusting me. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to play with a pig like you.” Binigyan ko siya ng malamig na tingin. Bago pa ito makagalaw ulit ay isinaksak ko na sa kanya ang espada. His blood came out bursting as it splattered to us. “Then, goodbye.” I pulled out the sword and gave it back to Davidron.

“You should have let us torture him, my lady.” Hilda handed me a handkerchief to wipe the blood on me.

“You say that but I would not allow it. I may have been the one to do that if I still let him live for a short while.” Mahina kong sagot. Hindi na siya umalma.

The fourth day at Lodia, it was normal and nothing seems to be suspicious at all. Or so I thought.

Suddenly, the cup of tea fell from my grasp before I was able to take a sip. Bigla na lamang akong nanghina at bumigay ang aking mga tuhod. I clung at Hilda before I completely fell to the floor. I was catching my breathe as I clutched to my chest. My dark dress wrinkled.

“What the...” Blood spilled from my mouth. It was not that many that I was able to wipe it off myself.

It seems that I still have my energy remained inside me.

“My lady!” Nag-aalalang singhal niya.

“Kailan pa?” I muttered. I glanced at Hilda with my eyelids half-closed. “Give me water.” I let go of her. Tinulungan niya muna akong makapatong sa gilid ng aking kama bago dali-daling kumuha ng baso ng tubig. Napangisi ako nang marami na akong malunok na tubig.

So this is why I have been a little lightheaded lately.

Napasinghal ako.

I guess I was pretty stupid to be carefree, I admit. I did not expect that someone would feed me poison in a straight-handed way. Whoever was it is brave or stupid.

Hours of sleep after that, I let Davidron in my room. Like Hilda, he is also frantic and worried, visible.

“Milady.” He gently uttered. He knelt down.

“Ano?” Irritation was visible in my tone. Napapiksi siya dahil doon. Napayuko siya. I sighed.

It is not like I have intended to raise my voice. This might be an after-effect of the poison.

Napalunok ako.

“I am sorry for our carelessness, my lady. Are you all right now, my lady?” He stuttered. Halata na hindi alam ang kanyang sasabihin sa akin.

“It is fine. It is not a big deal.” I waved my hand as a dismissal of my condition.

“It may not be a big deal for you but it is for us.” Worry is visible in his voice. Napabuntong-hininga ako. “Please let us take care of everything you need.” He knelt before kissing the back of my hand.

“Fine. Then, have you found out whose servant it is that keeps on slipping poison in my food?”

“Paumanhin. We are still finding that out, Milady.” He shook his head. I ended up gritting my teeth but I did not show him.

Whoever that servant is skilled, I did not even noticed I was being poisoned. Even Hilda and Davidron.

“You may leave now.” Malamig kong sabi. He stood up and bowed before leaving me alone. Hilda came in after giving me a few minutes to be alone. She sighed as soon as she saw me staring out the window.

I think I know what she is going to say.

“You don’t have to be so harsh, my lady.” She blinked. Napairap ako;

I knew it.

“Harsh? What harsh? I have always been like this.” She is just a bit upset because I got irritated over Davidron. This hypocrite... Besides that, the case of this damn poisoning. Still have not found out who did it.

“Hindi ko alam kung bakit mas lalo kang naiirita ngayon ay dahil sa kalagayan mo ngayon o dahil wala ang unang prinsipe.” Sinamaan ko siya ng tingin sa kanyang tinuran.

“You, too, are making my head ache.” Napahawak ako sa aking noo. A heavy sigh and a shook of my head.

Night came. The least visitor I expected came knocking at the door. Hindi pa man ako nakakasabat ay binuksan niya ang pintuan at lumapit sa akin.

Of course, this would not be wrong. He is a prince, after all. Paano ko siya ipagpapabawalan kung ang batas ay ang dugong bughaw na maharlika?

I mentally rolled my eyes. Hindi ako umalis sa aking kama at tinignan lamang siya. He snorted.

Does he expect me to stand before and bow like a person without any sickness at all? I am lying in bed, poisoned. I do not have an ounce of will to do that for him.

“I heard something happened.”

“Leave us.” Ani ko kay Hilda na nasa tabi naman. She excused herself. Nang maisara na ang pintuan ay tumingin ulit ako sa kanya. I was waiting of what he is going to say. “What is the second prince doing in his betrothed’s room?” Ani ko.

Alam ko naman na hindi siya naririto dahil nag-aalala siya sa akin. Something must have happened for him to see me in person.

“Why, you mean? Is it not natural for me to visit my fiancee knowing that she was poisoned?” Napatabingi ako sa kanyang sinabi. Hindi ko mapigilan ang mapasinghal.

“Nag-aalala ka ba?” He did not answer of my sarcastic question. “Thank you. I really appreciate it.”Diin ko. “Are you done? Is that it?” I shrugged. “Is my suspect done?” Lumamig ang aking boses.

Whether he is the one who did it or not, it is still his fault that I got poisoned. He promised my safety and it turned out like this. Nasisiguro ko na nalaman na rin ng mga kawal ng hari na iniataas na magbantay sa akin ang kalagayan ko ngayon. They will surely report it to the king since I am favored by him.

Nanlamig ang aking mga mata.

Heiden or the shadow knights. All of them are useless.

I clicked my tongue.

Even Rionsky and Lorves who I heard who will protect me did not get ahold of the situation. Things are not going well with my direction, huh? Is fate playing with me?

A chuckle escaped from my lips.

“What are you implying?” He gave me an eyeful of glare.

“Ah, nothing. It is not a big deal. Knowing that my betrothed have been ordering someone to poison me without anyone noticing is not a big deal at all.” Umiling ako at pekeng ngumiti. Sumingkit ang aking mga mata.

I am still not sure if he was the one who ordered it since there is no definite proof but he is the only one close to me that has a possibility of doing it. It does not hurt to suspect him. “I am not saying that it is true, okay? I am just saying that it is possible.”

“I poisoned you?” Tumabingi siya. My eyes squinted.

Why is he acting ignorant? Hindi ba siya iyon?

Napapiksi ako nang bigla siyang lumapit sa akin. He leaned on me, cornering me between his arms. I can feel his hot breath against my skin and it is making my skin hair stand.

This situation puts us in a tense atmosphere.

Ang mukha ko ay iginilid ko dahil naiirita ako sa kanyang pagmumukha. On the other hand, my heart is beating abnormally. Maybe because of this position or the fact that he is looking at me with those innocent-like eyes right now, as if saying he had not done anything wrong. Napakagat ako sa aking labi.

He is making me think that he is not guilty about it. He, as expected, never fails to annoy me.

“You may get out if you are already done.”

“Seeing how you are still good at arguing, you seem fine.” I just snorted. “I heard about the duke.” He whispered. Napatingin ako sa kanya. Saktong nagtama ang mga mata namin. Hindi ako umatras sa sobrang lapit ng aming mga mukha na parang magdidikit na. Sa halip ay tinaasan ko siya ng kilay.

“Hmm... I guess it was not confidential.” Ani ko. I crossed my arms. He stared at me for a few seconds. I secretly sighed in relief when he stood up and stopped caging me in his arms. “So what are you going to do about it?”

“You can go first. I will send you some knights.”

“I knew you were going to say that. I am afraid I will deny.” Ngisi ko.

“Why?” Nagsalubong ang kanyang mga kilay. I glanced at him with a cunning smile.

“Do I need a reason to not be with my fiance?” Because you might be doing your plot behind my back, is that not enough?

“You’re strange. You were in relief to not be with me. Are you planning something?” Is it not you?

“Are you not the same? You were asking for my opinion.” Sabat ko.

Heiden does not ask for my opinion yet why does he now? Isa lamang ang naiisip ko, may iba siyang pinaplano. I am itching to know what is going on in his mind.

I licked my lips.

“Damn vixen.” He cursed under his breath. I scoffed.

“Well, thank you.” I sarcastically said.

“I will be off then.” Tinalikuran niya ako.

“Why not stay since it seems like you want being with me.” I said, teasing him. Napatigil siya ngunit umalis na rin na hindi ako sinasagutan. He left me hanging without an answer. I snorted.

It is what I expected from him. “Still stiff as ever.” I shrugged. Napailing ako at itinuloy ang pagbabasa ng diyaryo.

“My lady.” I lost my concentration when I heard Hilda’s voice.

“Oh, did you get my jasmine tea?” She nodded. Ipinatong niya sa lamesa ang tasa bago ibinigay sa akin. I took a sip on it. Bumuntong-hininga ako nang maluwag. I closed my eyes and leaned on the headrest.“Have you figured it out?”

“Hindi pa.” Her voice lowered in disappointment. My brow raised a little.

Well, I know she is disappointed and angered that I was poisoned and cannot still find out who did it. I guess it was also my fault since we became carefree with this trip. I forgot that I may have more enemies than just Heiden and Ruvia.

I dismissed her, giving her head some cooling but I know she will continue on finding the culprit. Her dark bags under her eyes are visible that I know she will not get enough sleep until she fulfill her mistake.

“I wonder who was it.” I whispered. I blinked and turn off the lights. Leaving the lamp open, I laid on the bed and closed my eyes. I was about to have my sleep when it felt cold and a familiar scent came coming to my nose. I immediately figured out who it was. Kaunting napaawang ang aking mga labi nang naramdaman ko ang mainit niyang paghinga. I clutched on my sheets. Mabuti na lang at makapal ang aking kumot kaya hindi niya ito nahalata. My heart was beating loudly but I managed to calm down. Just when I finally relaxed, I felt a soft, hot thing in my lips. Hindi ako nakapagtimpi at naimulat ko ang aking mga mata. I grabbed his wrist when he was about to leave. My cheeks are feeling hot since then. Napatigil siya.

“Did you came here just to give me a peck?” I greeted this adorable prince.
