"Okay, I'm in my fertile window which means that we need to have sex every other day starting from today," Joelle informed her boyfriend as they looked at each other from opposite ends of the bed.

Ever since Joelle and Jack found out that even after all of the positive results from the drugstore pregnancy tests that they weren't expecting a baby, they had been trying to conceive.

They both felt so deflated after the ultrasound proved that there was nothing growing inside of Joelle's uterus. The excitement of becoming parents was something that they were desperate to feel again so Joelle did some research and was now planning when their prime time was to have unprotected sex.

"I thought getting someone pregnant was supposed to be easy." Jack groaned as he lay on the bed beside his girlfriend, small beads of sweat glistening on his tanned face.

"They always make it out to be that way, don't they?" Joelle sighed, feeling her boyfriend press a loving kiss to her cheek.

"What if we're just not meant to be parents?" The curly haired girl questioned as she turned to look at Jack, neither of them wearing anything but their underwear.

"Hey, if we want to be parents, we'll be parents. stop being so negative." Jack scolded his other half as he thought about all the other ways that would allow for them to be parents.

Joelle got butterflies in her stomach as she thought about being a parent alongside Jack. It felt so surreal to her that they used to be kids, sitting in a tree house and talking about their future plans. She was living her dream from when she was fourteen years old.

"When did you first realise that you had a crush on me?" Joelle asked her boyfriend as her fingers absentmindedly traced his tanned abs, sending shivers through Jack's body.

"I felt really guilty for it because I was convinced that you were supposed to be like my sister and I thought you were too young for me but I was fifteen." Jack could recall the day perfectly. He was trying to teach Joelle how to play football. She knew all the rules from watching all the game with Jack but she had no technique and he was positive that he could a fart a ball into the back of the net with more force than Joelle could kick it. The curly haired girl had had multiple attempts at shooting at the full sized goals and had missed every single time. She was hopeless but she was still laughing and having a good time with him. In that moment, Jack had never looked at Joelle like a sister ever again.

"Around the same time as me. I was fourteen when I realised that I fancied you." Joelle smiled as she remembered the day vividly. Some random girl from Jack's class had been teasing Joelle about her curly hair, saying that it was always frizzy and always calling her 'ugly' or 'curly fry'. Back in those days, it was straight hair only. Jack had caught wind of what was happening after one of his mates had told him about the drama, laughing about it. It angered the Brummie boy and when he caught it happening, he stomped over there and ranted to the girl about how beautiful Joelle was. He had told her that curly hair was different in a good way and that Joelle would always be prettier than she was because she was a good person. It made the fourteen year old's heart flutter.

"Talk about perfect timing." Jack laughed as he stroked her shoulder, watching as the hair on her arms raised and goosebumps arose.

Despite both of them realising their feelings for each other at around the same time, neither of them acted on them until a year later.

Jack had been to a party that Joelle wasn't allowed to attend. She was behind on school work because instead of doing homework, she had been working on music so she was grounded and not allowed to see her best friend until she had completed all of her work. Sixteen year old Jack had gotten drunk and when he returned from the party, he climbed into Joelle's tree house to find her still working away. Drunk Jack thought she looked gorgeous with her hair in a messy ponytail with several pencils lost in the curly mess. That was when Jack had blurted out the words, "I like you." At first, Joelle laughed, thinking that he meant it in a friendly way but the following day, hungover Jack sneaked into the tree house and made his true feelings towards the girl crystal clear.

"Isn't it weird that there was once a time where the thought of being with each other grossed us out?" The curly haired girl laughed, thinking that it was strange that before she was fourteen, the idea of dating Jack seemed disgusting to her.

As the couple reminisced, Jack's phone went off, reminding him that he had training to attend to.

"Sorry, I've got to to. I'll see you tonight," the brunette boy scrambled to get dressed into his training kit and Joelle could only watch as he did so.

"I love you." He kissed her forehead before leaving the bedroom and a few seconds later, Joelle heard the front door slam shut.

The girl sighed, not quite knowing what to do since she was taking time away from performing her music to write her next album. It was proving to be quite difficult since the label were being very picky about what sound they wanted to hear.

Joelle opened up her instagram app and frowned when she saw the messages that had been left in her inbox.

They were hateful and hurtful and made Joelle feel small. If people didn't like her music or like her, what was she doing with her life? Was she wasting it on something that she would never be successful at?

a/n: poor joelle, she's really on a roller-coaster filled with the ups and downs of life right now :(
