The lights from the city passed by them as the car continued driving down the highway, cutting through the night. Ted let out a deep breath and exhaled it slowly as he controlled the steering wheel before moving his eyes in the direction of the lady sitting beside him.
"Hey." He called gently. "What's wrong? You are unusually quiet."
Her head snapped towards him in response, causing her hair to fly into the air behind her head. "Nothing." She smiled.
He didn't want to believe that, shaking his head curtly almost immediately. "Really? Are you sure you are completely fine? We can still return to the hospital."
"No, it's fine." She replied with an emphatic voice. "I feel a lot better."
He gave her a skeptical look for a second before nodding, deciding to trust her decision. "So, what's with the mood? You never wasted a second before sharing things with me, like what happened today."
She hesitated at first, thinking over what to tell him but eventually decided to talk about another subject. "You met with Mr. Stanley, right?"
Ted took his eyes from the road to show his deep frown briefly. "You mean that jerk?" He replied, turning his attention back to his front as soon as possible. "That guy was extremely full of himself. How do you cope with such an asshole?"
Maria chuckled, her elbow resting on the window's ledge beside her. "What happened?" She questioned him curiously, wanting to know if any fight really happened between them. Assuming that happened, she could guess Jayden was taking his irritation out on her earlier.
"Well, I guess I am mostly pissed about the fact he wasn't intimidated as I wanted him to be, and that makes me worried. He might harm you again."
She released a short laugh at his words, turning to capture his face with a questioning look. "Really?" She asked, her voice almost sounding disbelieving. "Things like that don't work on someone like him. Rather, I think the word intimidating as a human would be him."
He rolled his eyes in response, throwing a grumpy look of annoyance in her direction before continuing. "Well, I wasn't intimidated one bit." He stated and her snicker had him raising a brow at her. "Are you taking sides, Maria?"
"What? Of course not." She defended herself quickly with a headshake, but her laughter was still cracking behind her lips. "I never underestimated you ever since you beat up Dawn's good-for-nothing ex-boyfriend." She added teasingly with a grin.
"So, you did before that?"
"C'mon, don't get it twisted. I said that to earn your trust."
"Oh really? Then why are you not telling me what happened between you and that jerk today?" Ted squinted his eyes in her direction and she blinked slowly in response.
"Well..." She started with a sigh, her hands adjusting the strands of hair touched by the wind. "He didn't harm me on purpose, just felt the need to clarify that. His safety was also in danger."
"I still don't get why you followed him to work. Is that part of your job?" He questioned.
"Yes," Maria answered affirmatively, and the lack of sarcasm in her tone let him know she meant it. "I promised to be wherever he needs me as his personal doctor."
"Is that not slavery?" Ted raised an eyebrow and she chuckled.
"To be honest, it hits deeply when you put it that way." She admitted with a shrug. "But at least I got a rare opportunity to visit GreenStark. You really have to see it for yourself one day." Her blue eyes sparkled with wonder as she spoke.
