Background:
Katy is the oldest of three in her family. Her mother married a man when Katy was quite young, too young to remember her mother has a single parent.
Katy grew up sharing the father connection with her step-dad, having no desire to connect or learn about her biological father.
Katy decided to attend Columbia after hearing all about New York City growing up from the stories her mother would tell. Katy is unaware of the sibling connection.
Maddie on the other hand is too curious about what occurred 18 years ago with her own mother and father. After spending the summer trying to put the pieces together Maddie learned that her half-sister through her father's side was attending Columbia as well.
Maddie had arranged for the two to be "random roommates". Allowing Maddie to learn who Katy Benedict was.
Maddie after all was curious as to who Katy's mother was and why her father had an affair with her mom while also being with her own mother. All while also trying to find her own mother and learn why she left Maddie after giving birth.
