It was cold. Not the nice chilly kind, that would nip at the skin, no- this cold was bad. It was unwelcoming, unnerving, and it nagged at the child mercilessly, further forcing them to cower and shake into the small and seemingly cramped corner of the blank room.
She was scared to look up, because she knew if she did, she would meet the disturbing stares that belonged only to those scientists. But she could never find it in herself to hate them. She didn't know why, they had abused, tortured her to the very brink of insanity; and yet here she was, defending their actions. They were the closest thing she had to a family. They cared. Just- not in a way expressed by most.
Right?
'Don't you get it P-01487? We're this close to figuring it out! And when we do, everything will be perfect!' She reminded herself, over and over and over. Those exact words had been spoken to her multiple times, and it was those words that had been engraved into her mind. They were close! They had to be. . !
"01487," she heard the head scientist start, "Thank you. . . For your participation in this discovery."

With a quick press of a button, one of the three hatches inside the girl's 'room'. When she heard the little swishh of the small door open she could feel everything freeze.

The girl stilled, her breath hitching into her throat. She knew this would happen, she had prepared herself for this exact moment! So why couldn't she do anything?!
