POV Ciara

I am woken up early to Tucker shaking me awake. We hear Snyder barking out commands to some of the other bedrooms.

We all stand by our bunks silently with our heads tipped low. The door swings open and Snyder paces our room inspecting our preparation for his arrival.

He carries a thin whip that scares me half to death. Does he really hit kids with that thing?

He leaves the room and we all let out a breath we were carefully holding.

"So girlsie, we neva finished our conversation last night," Sparky began. "If Spot comes ta da rescue, will yous end up with him and live happily eva afta? Do yous believe Flynn?"

This was new. The boys at the refuge, Tucker and Sparky, started calling me girlsie. Another nickname to add to the books, but I didn't mind it.

But, his question had basically kept me up all night. Do I believe Flynn or decide to shut Spot out of life for sure?

"I really want to believe Flynn. I still really care about Spot." I answer honestly.

An hour or so later, Morris and Oscar Delancy rush through the hallways whining and yelling.

Crutchy and I crack open our door to try and listen as best as we can. They look like they were just in a fight and by the looks of it... they definitely were on the loosing end.

Morris knocks on Snyder's door, "Where's Uncle Weas? He said he'd be here today?"

"And we's got quite da news on Jack Kelly. I's think yous gonna wanna hear dis!" Oscar grins.

We watch Snyder's door open and he greets the two boys standing in the door frame.

"If this is urgent, tell me now. And quickly." Snyder remarks impatiently.

"Well boss, he broke Pulitzer's deal. He laid his hands on me brudda on I. Get a cell ready, Jack Kelly's comin back ta da refuge." Morris snarles.

We shut the door carefully so we don't make any noise.

"Jack made a deal with Pulitzer?" I ask.

Crutchy looks like he had just seen a ghost. He has shock written all over his face.

"Gutsy, I's saw Jack last night. It all makes sense why he was so down. He made a deal with da devil." he shivers.

"What? What are you talking about, Crutchy? Crutchy, you saw Jack last night and you didn't think to tell any of us?" I exclaim.

"Well, I's thought it would be a surprise for ya ta see Jack dis mornin. But by what da Delancy's are sayin, he wasn't supposed ta come back... b-but now he is?" Crutchy says slowly.

"Well, what happened last night?" Tucker asks.

"Nothin really, I's had ta deliver Mr. Snyder's food last night, rememba? And, I's heard Jack singing. I found him in a cell! I's told him dat I snagged some food off Snyder's plate. But Jack seemed really down. And so, I tried ta cheer him up. I's reminded him what he always told me, 'You can't let 'em beat ya.' And he said da saddest thing back ta me." Crutchy recalls sadly.

"And what was dat?" Sparky asks.

"We was beat when we was born." Crutchy sighs.

Poor Jack. He must be really broken if he couldn't even be cheered up by his pal Crutchy. It sounded so unlike him.

"I's wonder what kinda deal he made. Jack HATES Pulitzer... but I mean, don't we all." Crutchy states.

His voice wobbles a bit. There had to be more to a deal then not being allowed to hit the Delancy's.

Something isn't right.
