Chapter Forty Eight: Never Let Me Go

Sitting at the kitchen table, eating her breakfast, Alexandra made sure to chew slowly, patiently waiting for her best friend to leave.

No sooner had the door closed behind Sophia, that Alexandra gulped down the rest of her breakfast bagel, and tea, before turning to her companions.

"We are going to have an engagement party for Sophie and Samuel." She said, as Nicholas brought some dough out of the fridge and placed it on the counter. Her guards were milling about, waiting for her to finish eating, as they were discussing some matter.

The three men stopped what they were doing, only to look at her.

"Are we now?" Valek asked, amused.

"Yes. It's about time we had a little party, and what better news to celebrate than my best friend's engagement." She smiled, brightly.

When she saw the three of them remain expressionless, Alexandra sighed. What could possibly be wrong with throwing a small party? She thought. Normally they would be the ones coming up with the idea.

"What? It's the first time in months that we're all home. I can't throw a welcome home party because everyone would think I was crazy...since technically I never left." She paused taking a breath. "And I can't throw Nicholas a welcome home part for obvious reasons, while Mark knows that if he had really left me here for a few months...he would be getting a month of parties instead, and me begging him never to leave me again."

At this Mark and Valek started to laugh, while Nicholas looked a little confused.

"Why is that?" He asked Valek, while Mark sniggered.

"She hates it when I get morning duty. Apparently, my wake up calls are not to her liking." The blonde guard explained, as she shook her head with disdain.

"And rightly so. Who on earth wants to be woken up with 'Rise and shine sleepy head. Wake up, Alex! Before I come and wake you up myself." She imitated his tone, causing Nicholas and Mark to break into laughter once more.

"It is effective." Valek smirked.

"Effective? You must mean cruel." She retorted.

"Same difference."

Shaking her head, she tried once more to get them back to the subject at hand, and agree to the party.

"Well, can we have small party for Sophia then?"

"Okay, why not. Since you're already in the mood for celebrating, and neither of us will have to cajole you into coming." Valek agreed, as Mark nodded.

"Then why did I have to spend so much time convincing you?" She asked, annoyed.

"We didn't say anything actually...it was all you." Mark pointed out.

"Hilarious." She scoffed, as the guards grinned.

"So when will the party be held?" Nicholas asked, smiling as he walked over to sit beside her.

Seeing his smile always made her feel warm, and content. Nicholas' grey eyes extended the feeling as her hazel ones met his, making her forget her annoyance.

"Friday? Since it'll give us enough time to prepare...and give me something to look forward to."

"How many people?" Mark asked, coming up behind her, while Valek exited the kitchen to make his rounds.

"A few of her friends, and some of the guards Samuel knows well. Like Aram and Elijah. And us of course."

"Fine." Mark nodded. "Alright, time for you to come with me. You have meetings to get to."
