Chapter 3: Friend of a friend

Kim's POV

It was 5:30am when I woke from the sound of the shower. Ku Hye Sun was taking her bath for work and I had lost all hope that I was going to get my job back. She came into the bedroom with her bathrope on.
"Did you sleep well?" She greeted, I was so lazy to answer so I gave her a nod
She heard a ping on her phone, it seemed like someone sent her a message. She went towards the mirror to pick up her phone on the slab to check out what it was. Suddenly she shrieked
"What is it?!" I thought something bad had happened
"Stop worrying silly, Min just texted me, he was able to convince his cousin" Sun broke the good news to me
" Thats good news" I wasn't entirely happy
"Oh for once pretend it is" she teased but I gave no reply . "What's the matter?"Sun was concerned
"I'm not sure I'm cut out for this. What if something goes wrong again, what if I disappoint everyone once again,what if he comes back again to ruin everything for me" I ranted referring to the blonde guy
"Hey" Sun said to me gently
"You have nothing to worry about, you'll never be a disappointment to me.You are my best friend, I love you and I know you can do this" Sun tried to give me a little of encouragement
"And if he comes back to cause trouble, we'll show him what it feels like to mess with a woman from the West" She joked
"Smile, I need you to look beautiful for the people today" She added rubbing my cheek
I was quick enough to prepare for work because we had the first shift. We got to work 6:30am on the dot.
"Always early. That could earn you a promotion already in the labour market" Mr Hyung said to us
"Mr.Hyung I'm sorry about yesterday. I didn't..." He didn't let me finish my apology
"It's okay. You're a nice girl, now you learned your lesson. Try to avoid trouble when it customers, especially like the ones you met yesterday, you're lucky they had a white sheep among them" Mr Hyung referred to Sun's friend
"Just like they always say, 'the customer is always right',that applies to where you come from" He added referring to my country
"Yes it does" I responded gently
We did our work for the rest of the hours in preparing and serving the rich customers their orders. It was noon and I was already getting dizzy as a result of stress. I went towards Sun's direction and slam the tray on the slab.
"Take this" She handed a glass of orange juice to me
"I'm supposed to find this job interesting,no tips, its almost boring with the prying eyes always staring at me" I complained
"Oh I almost forgot you are not in L.A anymore" Sun gave a quick respond trying to sound sarcastic
"I'm grateful to your friend getting this job for me, but I'm almost regretful" I teased again
"You should be grateful. FYI, his name is Min" Sun informed me,immediately she said that, Min entered the cafe in a slow pace that reminded me of Jacob in the Twillight movie.He skin was pale but I admired his hair and height more.
"Speaking of the devil" I said to Sun,bshe stared at him too. He went on to grab a table beside the window.
"Stop staring at him" Sun warned me smacking my arm
"What?, I'm eccentric" I said purring as I grabbed the menu from the slab
"You sure you want to take his order?" Sun asked
"That's the least I can do to show my gratitude" I said as I left to take his order. Immediately I approached him, he didnt even let me talk
"I'd like a nice cup of coffee" He ordered
"I thought Koreans didn't like tea" I don't know what made me ask that question but I did anyway
"I beg to differ" He responded sternly
"Are you going to take my order or not?" He asked sounding a little bit harsh.
I was startled but I went to get his coffee anyway. In 3mins i was back with his coffee.
"Here you go" I said but he gave me a cold reaction and didn't even turn to look at me
I tried to leave but I couldn't.
"I just wanna thank you..." I tried to thank him but he stopped me
"I'm just glad today didnt turn out to be a disaster" He sounded sarcastic,I was angered a bit but there was nothing I could do about it. He dipped his hand in his jacket and brought out a note. I'm sure it was expensive in their currency. Sun was already teaching me a little about the country.
"Keep the change. Afterall its rude not to tip Americans" He added sounding a bit more mischievous just like his brother.
I was embarrassed but I had no choice but to take the money on the table so as not to annoy my customer or lose my job. I headed back to where Sun was with a sad look on my face,apparently Sun noticed it.
"I see that went well" She said to me but i gave her no reply.
" I saw everything. I'm sorry. I'm sure he doesn't mean to disrespect you" Sun said to me
"They're all the same" I said to her
"You don't know that" Sun tried to change my perspective
"I'm glad that turned out great. It couldn't have gone worse, tomorrow is his brother's birthday and its gonna be wild. The cafe is not gonna be opened until his birthday tomorrow evening starts and all the workers are expected to be present." Sun informed me.
Hours later, our shift ended. We left a few distance from the café but Sun wanted to go see someone.
"Take this money and board a bus home. It won't take you up to 5mins" Sun instructed and I nodded.
"Are u sure you'll be fine on your own?" Sun felt concern but I felt insulted
"Of course I will. Now go." I said to her and she left in a haste. I didn't wanna admit to her that I didn't know what to do,pride got the best of me. I was so confused that I didn't know where to go from there. Suddenly I heard a voice from behind me.
"Looks like you're stranded" He said from behind me. I turned around to see who it was, it was Sun's friend. He approached me putting his left hand in his pocket.
"Pfft,no I'm not" It felt like an awkward question that made me feel awkward.
"And she thought you were better off on your own" I felt a sense of mockery in his tone
"Of course I am" I defended
"Americans. Always on the defense" he said removing his hand from his pocket
"You still haven't answered my question" He added
"I thought it was a rhetorical" I tried to mock him but it didnt work
"Uhmm...I just got here and its gonna be very hard to adapt. I guess I'll have to walk from here. It won't take me up to 25mins tops" I ranted
"Do you want me to come with you"He offered, i wasn't even expecting it.
"No there really is no need" I replied in a haste
Immediately a Limo stopped in front of us, someone in the back of the Limo wind down his glass, it was his blonde and pompous cousin even though he looked handsome.
"We have an urgent matter to discuss. We need you at home Min." He said to Min but Min only gave him a nod
"What are you doing with the foreigner anyway." He tried to use that opportunity to mock me "Let's roll" He said to the driver and left.
"God he scares me" I said to myself, apparently Min heard me
"My cousin may be a bully and all but he has a good side" He tried to defend his brother
"I'd do anything to see it" I tried to sound sarcastic
"One day" He responded
"Now who's on the defense" I tried to tease him for defending his brother
"You still are" He replied
"Clever" I joked and he smiled
"Thanks for coming to my rescue but I'm fine by myself" I said to him nicely
"I'm not helping you. I just need to speak with Ku Hye Sun" he sounded cold
"Oh" I didn't know what to say to him so I kept mum. He gave me a mocking smile to cloud his statement.
"Its strange. I can't have a stranger accompany me home" I wanted to know more about him.
"A stranger, I just got you your job back" He said gently but was looking very shocked by my statement
"You know what I mean?" I referred to his name
"My name is Lee Min Ho and my cousin you detest is Kim Hyun Joong. The cynical one with the beautiful hair is Kim Sang" He said to me
"He's also your brother. He scared me too"I said
"Nah...he's just following my cousin's footsteps" He reponded
"Role model of the year" I said to myself but still he heard me
"What's your name?, full name please...Sun was quite stingy with that info" He asked whinning in a calm way
"Kimberly Young but you can call me Kim cause it sounds korean" I said to him without hesitation
"Nice to meet you Min" I said stretching forth my hand, he smiled but shook my hand anyway
"Me too" He gave me a short reply as we began our journey to my place. Its been 5 mins we've been walking down the streets of Seoul when I felt the urge to ask him a question
"How did you know my friend. I heard you all were friends once?" I was curious
"Don't let curiosity kill the cat" He said to me gently.
"Don't say it that way, you're trying to avoid my question" I scolded him
"Well we were pretty close once. We were like siblings until she chose to leave us. We all tried to leave with her but she chose not to come back" Min explained
"No way. You've been to L.A?"I was shocked
"Why do you think she chose that place, how did you think she was able to call to me for help in the first place. We've been in touch. My brother and my cousin still doesn't have the heart to forgive her for leaving us behind." Min added
"She hides so many things from me i'm starting to wonder if I even know her at all" I said to myself but he heard me
"Just give her time. Sun has gone through a lot of things in the past. All she needs is a loyal friend." He said to me, I was surprised to hear him call her Sun and he noticed.
"I loved calling her Sun" He said
"Me too"I responded
"She's like a sister to me, I don't know what I'd do if anything bad happens to her" I said
"Then keep being a sister to her. I know she'd do the same for you from the way she talks about you" He teased
"I hope its the good sides of me" I teased back
"Of course" He responded smiling
"Why can't your brothers be like you?" I said to him
"There's something called a Genetic difference" He tried to crack a joke and it worked, I found myself chuckling
"Thats funny. That's good" I remarked
"Of course it is" He concluded smiling
After a long walk we got closer to my home.
"Its been an hour.I thought I would make it home sooner" I teased
"That's a good thing. I can't remember when last I did this" He complained
"That's coming from a rich champ, I enjoyed your company though" I commended but he didn't reply but only smiled back at me
As we approached my home I noticed something odd. The window was open.
"Guess Sun's got a fast feet" I said to Min
I opened the door and Min followed behind,closing the door for me.I saw Sun on the floor looking sad and worn out.
"Sun, are u alright?, what's up with the sad face, did something happen?"I was very worried but she didnt respond and I got more worried.
"Kim can you excuse us for a minute?" Min requested, I don't know why but I had no choice but to listen, maybe he could figure out what's going on with Sun. I headed for the bedroom but didnt close the door properly to eavesdrop on them, I know its wrong but I was curious.
"You need to tell her the truth"Min said to Sun
"I can't, not now" Sun responded
"She's your friend." Min continued
"Exactly, that's why I have to wait for the right time" Sun said
"I can help you" He said to her
"I don't need anyone's definitely not from you" Sun said to him sounding more furious.
