"Hey Michael, haven't spoken to you in a while"
"Uh hey mum" I say looking outside the window from our bedroom.
"How are you?"
"I'm fine but mum there's something that I have to tell you"
She gasps "is it your father?"
"Why would you care?" I mumble under my breath "anyway-"
"I still care about your father" my mum says interrupting me.
"Anyway" I say more loudly to make her understand that I want to change the topic. This phone conversation wasn't about my father "uh mum I'm getting married"
"What?" She says "could you say that again I was trying to find my shoes"
"I'm getting married" I say again. I hear something drop into the ground and then silence.
Complete silence
It's like if you drop a pin the whole world could hear it.
"Mum?" I say fidgeting around in my bed, her being silent is making me anxious "mum answer me please!"
"Marriage!?!" She chokes out "you’re getting married?"
"Uh yeah" I say "Luke proposed to me a few days ago and yeah I'm going to be married"
"Michael aren't you a bit too young?" She says sighing.
"I know eighteen is a young age to get married but I love him and he loves me what's the problem with that?"
"Well Michael I don't think your mature enough to become a married man"
"M-mum are you saying that you don't want me to get married?" I ask her my voice shaky
"No!" Mum exclaims "I just think you're a bit too young"
Too young? I don't want to be any older. I don't want to be changed at around my 30's when all the changes start happening to me and then I'll look older and probably have the start of wrinkles and no I don't even want to think about it. I'll be older looking than Luke, and that's something I don't want to be.
"Mum I get it I'm young, I'm still growing. But let me tell you something being with Luke has made me feel safer than you guys. My parents. The people who were supposed to keep me safe. He keeps me safe, sometimes he treats me like a lost puppy but I'm okay with that. He loves me so so much mum and I'm getting married. I'm going to be called one of the Hemmings and I don't care what you think. Oh and by the way I haven't seen dad since you left"
