Book One.

Zuria

"Come on. Let me hear it, babygirl." I listened closely from the crack of the door as Marley stood in front of Mitch nervously. He rested his hand under his chin and looked into her eyes as she swayed back and forth.

"2 plus 2 is four. Four plus four is eight.." She started with her tiny voice, warming my heart while he listened to her intently.

"And eight plus eight is sixteen."

"Aight." He nodded slowly, obviously impressed.

"Now what's sixteen plus sixteen?" He challenged, watching as her eyes bulged out of her head.

"Um.."

"Hold on." She ended up using her fingers but still came up with nothing.

"But daddy we don't do that in class yet." She went on to say, making me laugh softly, giving away my presence. The both of them looked over to me as I stood there and Mitch couldn't help but to smile.

"What's up, ma?"

"Hey." I waved to them.

"You aight?" He asked and I nodded slowly, walking through the kitchen now.

"I was just watching y'all."

"You hungry?" I expressed, looking through the cabinets.

"Nah. You hungry, babygirl?" He asked Marley and I turned around to see what she would say.

"Yes, daddy." She nodded her head.

"What do you want to eat?" I asked her as she looked over to me, tapping her finger onto her chin.

"Pancakes." We spoke in unison while I playfully rolled my eyes.

"Of course." I said, considering that's all she ever wanted.

"Pancakes and what? Sausage or bacon?" I asked her as I began to go through the fridge.

"Sausages." She spoke excitedly and I simply nodded, finding the sausages for her.

"Pancakes and sausage coming right up for princess, Mars." I told her, making her smile wide.

"And for Queen Zuri." She added on, making me smile. She was such a sweetheart.

"What about me?" Mitch grilled her, turning his lips while she giggled at his mean mug.

"You can be King daddy and mommy is.." She trailed off, trying to think.

"Fuckin' peasant." I heard Mitch mumble under his breath as he stood to his feet. I quickly turned around, scolding him when he did as Marley continued to think about where her mother would be placed in the "kingdom."

"What did I tell you about that, Mitch?" I couldn't help but to say while he began to walk out of the room.

"I ain't say nothin' ma." He smirked before leaving the kitchen all together and I rolled my eyes hard.

I'd told Mitch before to stop saying things about Marley's mom in front of her. Though the two of them didn't get along and she wasn't the best person, it didn't mean he could just say stuff like that in front of his daughter. More so because I knew she caught onto it most of the time, she wasn't a dumb child.

She didn't need that energy around her.

"Well I guess both you and mommy can be Queen." Marley smiled and I nodded slowly, pulling out the pancake mix.
