"So when did you want to get married?"

I paused, staring down at the pan of vegetables I was frying. I found something to focus on, quickly zeroing in on the smallest spec of seasoning on a particular piece of mushroom. The food had been the only thing I had to focus on all morning.

That, and the constant pawing of Dalkyum at my ankles.

Upon stumbling on the realization that an unanswered question was still floating about, I looked over my shoulder, finding him staring at me with an intense, yet loving gaze. He raised his eyebrows at me, and I found myself becoming nervous.

"When?" I asked dumbly.

He nodded in affirmation and looked down at his laptop.

"I was thinking either in the fall or spring. That way it's neither too hot or too cold. Can't have my beautiful bride shivering, can we?"

The words 'bride' and 'married' made my skin crawl.

Oh, I thought with a nervous chuckle, this is it. It's actually happening.

I didn't know why I expected him to be more lenient about the whole thing, why I expected him to want to wait things out a bit more. But why would he? He had so much time to even consider marrying me, I should have known that when he finally bought a ring that his mind was set. And then again when he proposed to me.

I had longed to be married to him for the longest; craving the ring, the wedding, the lifelong stability, the swarm of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed kids.

So what was this feeling of apprehension? Why did I feel so rushed?

I snapped out of my headspace immediately, remembering I still hadn't answered his question, yet. For some reason, I couldn't think. I could have sworn I had everything planned out; the season, the theme, and the ideal location. But now, when I'm faced with nothing but uncertainty.

"Unless," He hung on the word until I turned to face him again, "You just want to be my girlfriend forever."

"W- what? No. Absolutely not." I chuckled, moving the pan off the eye so the veggies wouldn't burn.

"So... When do you want to do it?" He asked again, eyes burning holes into my soul. I usually loved the way I felt under that look but today, I felt uneasy.

"I don't know, maybe the fall?" I said, stepping up to the counter. I could feel the nerves eat away at me until there was nothing left.

I watched his face contort into one of confusion as he observed me. I knew he could sense something was off with me, but he remained patient, acting almost as if he didn't notice. But I knew better. He noticed everything.
