There was a time in my life
when paperboats sailed in the mud puddles
ever so gently in the backyard,
my heart swelling with pride
as they float away
followed by a deep frown
when the drizzle drowned them.
There was a time in my life
when my bestfriend was the barbie in pink.
Braiding her hair, dressing her up
falling asleep with her in my arms,
sweet dreams ensuing
and a slight smile creeping up my face.
There was a time in my life
when Mickey and Minnie were my favourite duo.
Waking up early to watch the 8 am show,
singing along and dancing to their songs,
longing to meet them sometime in my life.
There was a time in my life
when nothing was distressing
and no one to detest me,
when broken dolls and the two marks lost in the test
were the biggest heartaches
I could probably imagine.
Oh, there was a time in my life
when I was a lively and uncurbed little girl
with dreams as big as the skies
and a yearning to fulfil them someday,
running around, laughing and smiling
unaware of the knackering years to come.
Dear childhood, if only you knew
how much my heart aches
at the mere thought of you,
you wouldn't have left me
without a word
but instead would've stayed with me
forever more.
