"Scarlett Gilbert, is it?" An unfamiliar voice speaks, making my eyes snap over to the man who stood in front of me, holding a glass of champagne. The face was familiar- Bonnie's professor dude. Never met him but apparently he's super suspicious. But he's also a judge.

"Yes, and you are?" I say, with a small smile and holding my hand out. I already knew his name from all the shit Damon talks about him and the way Bonnie gushes about the dude- I wouldn't let him know that though. He takes my hand in his with a firm shake, and smiles.

"Oh excuse my manners, I'm Atticus Shane." He says. I nod, moving my hand from his grip.

"I couldn't help but notice I met every other candidate besides you." He says making me send him an apologetic look.

"Sorry about that. Had to deal with some family stuff for a little." I say, awkwardly. Had no idea where this conversation was going. Behind him from a distance my eye catches Klaus's, who had been eying the two of us as he spoke to god knows who. We split off once we got to the party, I had to go around making some sort of conversation (so I could even have a chance of winning) and I couldn't really do that with his intimidating ass breathing over my shoulder.

Also if dancing with Klaus made everyone sus, returning from a trip in the woods with him would do me no justice whatsoever.

I hadn't seen Elena or Damon or even Jeremy since I got back. I did see Caroline and Tyler but that was about it.

"I was very impressed with your dance and entrance. I think you really have a high chance of winning." He says making a small smile spread across my face. thought I kinda bombed it but this positive feedback was hitting different.

"Thank you." I say. My eyes snap towards Stefan who had just suddenly reappeared. He looked  disheveled.

"I did actually come over to ask you about something-" I completely zoned out of Shane's words as my eyes follow Stefan who had just entered the mansion, that had been empty.

"I'm sorry. Excuse me for a moment." I say, looking to Shane only to shoot him an apologetic look.

"Of course, go ahead." He says politely. Thank god- I didn't feel like pissing off a judge before they began deciding on who won. I move past the people in the crowd, finding it rather difficult as I do. I finally get to the house and go in.

"Stefan?" I call, stepping further inside and closing the door behind me. I enter the living room, finding no trace of him. I hear a swoosh from behind me and turn to see him standing in the doorway.

"Hey." I say, stepping forward. "Where have you been?" I ask as he leans against the door frame.

"I had to handle something." He says cooly. I furrow my brows at his demeanor.

"In the middle of the dance?" I ask, not taking his answer as the truth. He was acting off, solemn. His playful mood had completely shifted.

"Do you remember the night of the ball?" He says, avoiding the question as he adjusts the cuffs of his suit.

"Yes. What does that have to do with anything?" I say, slightly in confusion. I think back to the night, dancing with Klaus and then the very first time we kissed. How I denied everything I felt. What a contrast compared to tonight.

"You kissed me back." He says making me furrow my eyebrows.

"We were drunk, Stefan. You were upset about Elena- I told you I understood it was a mistake."

"I wasn't drunk." I step forward again. It was as if he were trying to say something without explicitly saying it.

"Then you were tipsy. You were emotional and I get it, Stefan. I don't get why your bringing this up now-"
