Nick's POV

"Easy. Easy babe." Spencer's practically chomping at the bit to get out of the car. She ended up having to stay an extra week in the hospital, much to our dismay. She ended up getting an infection in her leg, followed by a minor case of pneumonia.

I was so scared I would lose her. Her temperature had elevated to a dangerous degree and she was incoherent. It took a good two days of IV antibiotics to manage it.

But she is out. She's in my truck, that is currently parked in front of the farmhouse and she's trying to contain herself from jumping right from the truck. Although she's excited and even relieved, I can still see the weariness in her beautiful eyes.

She's exhausted. Even though she's been lying in a hospital bed for almost two weeks, it's amazing how being in that environment can wear down on you.

We are both beat.

I spent every waking moment with her, afraid I would close my eyes and she would slip away from me. I paid a few men to manage the farm chores and my dad oversaw it all. Jayden stayed with my parents and sister, who decided to take vacation time to stay with us. He's been better since he can talk and see Spencer awake. He is still with them today, my mom wanted to give us time to settle back in.

"Wait here for a sec baby, while I go unlock the door." I take her bag and crutches with me and go unlock the front door. Her ribs are still aching, and holding her crutches is painful for her. For now, I carry her everywhere. Not that I mind of course. I love the feel of her warm body in my arms. I feel complete with her around me. And I feel like I can protect her, which I had failed to do two weeks ago. I hate that I wasn't there for her and Jay. My self-loathing thoughts swirl around my brain.

You should have been there. It would not have happened if you were there. She's hurt because of you.

My thoughts seem to slowly torture me.

I toss her bag by the entryway and lean her crutches against the wall before heading to go get my girl.

Her eyes never leave my approaching form. The emotions swirling in her eyes makes my heart clench.

I don't deserve her.

She swings the door open right as I try reaching for it. She wraps one of her arms around my neck as I scoop her up into my arms.

"I'm so happy to be home." She yawns.

"Me too, baby. You have no idea." I murmur. There were times I wasn't sure we'd ever be coming home. And there were times I was petrified that she would never be coming home at all. I just kept imagining having to walk out that building while her lifeless body remained inside. I hugged her closer as I carried her inside.

"Let's take a shower to wash off that hospital smell and then we can take a nap. How does that sound." She pouts slightly.

"But I want to check the animals."

"Baby, they are fine. Dad's been overseeing the men and you need rest. You're exhausted."

"No, I'm no-" A yawn slipped through her lips as she tried to protest. I chuckle at her as she blushes.

"Suuure." I walk her up the stairs and set her gently down on her bed. "I forgot your cast cover. I'll be right back. Don't move."

She rolls her eyes playfully. "Yes, sir." I groan as I can feel my dick begin to harden. She knows what that does to me. We have had our fair share of role playing even though we have never had sex.
