The night was quiet, save for the steady hum of Jungwon’s fan spinning lazily on his desk. His room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of his phone screen, but he couldn’t sleep—not with her words still echoing in his head.

“Do you believe in slow love?”

He hadn’t even hesitated before replying.

"Only when it’s worth it. And you are."

And she hadn’t replied after that.

Not with words, anyway.

But she’d left a little heart emoji minutes later—simple, pink, shy.

It was enough to make his chest feel too full.

-

“You’ve been trash at free throws lately,” Sunghoon teased, catching the rebound and tossing the ball back.

Jungwon tried again. Missed again.

“Yup. You’re officially broken,” Sunghoon said. “What’s on your mind?”

Jungwon wiped sweat from his brow, breathing deeply. “She makes me nervous.”

Sunghoon blinked. “You’ve been texting her every night and talking to her in real life. You’ve got, like, the best of both worlds.”

“But I’m not giving her the truth in either one.”

Sunghoon passed the ball to him gently this time. “So give her part of it. You don’t have to reveal the number thing yet. Just let her see more of the real you.”

Jungwon nodded slowly. Maybe that was the right way. Maybe showing her more of himself in person would help her connect the dots—on her own terms.

-

Jiwon was waiting by her locker when he saw her. Her hair was tied back today, two little strands curling near her cheeks, and he nearly forgot what he was going to say.

She looked up and smiled when she noticed him.

“Hey,” she said softly.

He gave her a small smile back. “Want to get something sweet after school?”

Her brows lifted. “Like… dessert?”

“Yeah.” He shrugged. “You’ve been stressed lately. I figured sugar might help.”

She blinked, then smiled wider. “That’s actually really thoughtful.”

They walked down the hallway together, their steps syncing naturally. And Jungwon realized—he didn’t have to say something clever to make her laugh. He just had to be present.

And himself.

-

They sat by the window, sharing a small slice of strawberry cake and warm drinks. The late afternoon light made the place feel soft and quiet, like their own little world.

“Isn’t it funny?” Jiwon mused between sips. “I’ve only been at this school for a couple months, but it already feels like I’ve always been here.”

He looked at her. “Maybe that’s because you’ve always belonged somewhere like this.”

She turned to him, surprised. “That’s really sweet, Jungwon.”

He smiled, but inside, his heart was thudding.

She was right in front of him. And she still didn’t know.

-

Jiwon:
I had strawberry cake with him today. He offered before I could even hint I was having a rough week. He just… noticed.

Unknown Number:
He’s learning how to read your silences. That means he really cares.

Jiwon:
He’s not who I expected at all. But he’s everything I needed.

Unknown Number:
I think he feels the same way.

Jungwon hesitated.

Typed.

Deleted.

Typed again.

Unknown Number:
Can I ask something selfish?

Jiwon:
Sure.

Unknown Number:
Even if you found out something unexpected about him… would you still want him to be the one?

There was a pause.

Jiwon:
If his heart is the same… yeah. I think I would.

Jungwon closed his eyes.

And smiled into the silence of his room—relieved, scared, and more in love than he was ready to admit.
