Y/n POV:

A week after the play is my birthday. I jump out of bed, get ready for school, and because today is special, I put on some light makeup.

"Bye, Papa!" I call, waving as I run out the door.

Right into Toshi.

Again.

"Oof- sorry!" I wobble and try to balance myself with my tail.

"Honestly Koneko, one day I'm gonna fall and die." He chuckles and grabs my arms, steadying me.

We walk to the station in comfortable silence, but halfway there he stops.

"Today's your birthday...right?" I nod, surprised.

He grins, then continues on. Thar was odd...I shrug and skip alongside him.

The school day is pretty mellow. Classes zoom by, lunch is normal, and soon it's time to go. But as soon as I bid Toshi goodbye and step inside my house, something is off.

I immediately tense up, ready to fight. I feel myself morphing into my "power form", and I twitch my ears, searching for sound.

I hear nothing, no movement nor breathing, but that's the issue. Papa and I were going to have a family night together. Just us, cupcakes, pizza, and Netflix. But he's not here. His keys aren't on the counter, his scent is hours old.

I dash to his room- his hero costume isn't there. I start panicking. Is he okay? What if he was kidnapped?!

I frantically search the house twice over. Nothing. I slump over at the counter, but pop up a second later.

There's a paper neatly folded in front of me. Is it a ransom note?!

I quickly unfold it and relief floods through me. It's from Papa.

Dear Chickadee,

I must go to America, there's an urgent case of kidnappings in North Carolina and murders in California. I won't be home for at least a week. I'm so sorry I'm missing your birthday.

Tears prick my eyes. He hasn't ever missed a birthday, even if it meant taking me with him overseas.

"I'll visit mom!" I smile sadly and jog to my room, changing out of my uniform and into some comfy clothes.
